It's the rocking shaft that drives the piston valves of an original Bullied Pacific, Manston in this case. The originals are outside admission, and this shaft enters the exhaust steam chamber and the lever is linked to the forward part of the piston shaft. You can just see that running to the right from the top of the lever. The whole set up can be seen in the right of this schematic:

Hopefully the Bulleid Owners Manual will have more drawing along those lines.

Well apart from the fact that the photo is captioned, it's clearly a view of the steam chest and rocking shaft/lever that actuates the piston valve. I've some excellent photos of the valve gear in a book somewhere, but damned if I can find it right now, plus I helped put City of Wells together first time around, so seen it in the metal too.

Hmm - anyone else find the email notifications irritating when there are later posts that you don't see when clicking through to the thread?

OK, but if you've all got copies of the Haynes Manual it will be too easy!

Spoil sport Nick. You could have left it a bit longer! I saw this last night and didn't post because I thought it would be more interesting to see what others thought or knew it could be!

Typical; looked at completely the wrong end of the engine (and got the engine wrong in the process, but I'm surprised at the amount of surface rust down there, but then again, heat and sea air probably plays a part)! I think it would be a seller if they did produce a Haynes manual-style book on popular classes of locomotive. It would be quite an interesting project to be involved in, research-wise. I quite liked the 'guess the bit' concept, though. You could start a new SLL competition based upon that premise...

Well, similar, but more like their car manuals.

According to the ELR website, Shaw Savill is 'awaiting restoration', Holland-America Line is 'under restoration' and Port Line is a 'contract restoration'..

Yes, it does seem to have gone awfully quite on the "B.I.L" front, Chris.

Considering the apparent pending sale was announced nearly exactly a year ago, i would have thought it would be up north by now.

I too am wondering if there is any further progress on it moving to Bury, or were the steam rags jumping the gun by publishing rumours rather than fact, as is often the case nowadays.

You can't believe everything you read in the press where ownership is concerned.

If she hasn't moved up north I take she is still at Portland. Ashame considering she wasn't that far from steaming again. I wonder what condition she is now in?

On this thread, some months ago, someone categorically stated that BIL has left Portland.

This is surely untrue. Perhaps they meant Portland Oregon LOL..

I dont believe much in the press regarding ownership until it is confirmed and publicly announced by the parties involved.

35018 "British India Line" has had more ownership changes in unrestored/part restored preservation than most other locomotives in their post BR career and is no closer to working, partly because of this merry go round.

Lets just hope that if Ian Riley has bought her, she can now have a stable and secure future with a medium term goal of restoration to working order.

As the prototype rebuild, she at least deserves it!

Again, we'll have to see what happens. Maybe 35018 doesn't feature in any plans, and that 35022 might have changed hands instead. We don't know any better until something official emerges. Its all speculation at the moment, but it would be nice if the bright future that seemed to be dawning a year ago finally becomes reality.

I can confirm that British India Line has left Portland, as I was there in the middle of August and she had been moved. Where she went I have no real idea. My parents live in Dorset and we quite often go for a walk on Portland bill when I am down there. And she was nowhere to be seen. Even my parents comented that she hadn't been seen for a while
