This line caught my attention - four that you need? Whilst the concept of all the original L&B motive power being resurrected is a fantastic one and would be very impressive it surely cannot be "a need" any time soon especially given the requirement for major finance elsewhere to extend the rebuilt line beyond it's current length?

 

Beatles' producer George Martin, when asked how many tracks were necessary when recording a song, replied: "One more than you've got."

 

This is indeed great news, despite the difficult financial conditions we are all living through - the 762 Club website has now been updated!

 

Any news on this loco?

The website states that "The intention is to complete construction by 2012 - and earlier if possible." I would've thought we should be looking at a rolling chassis by now?

In 1995 the GWS said 6023 would be in steam by 1997. In 1997, they said she would be in steam by 1999. In 2001, they said 4079 would be ready by 2004. In 2006, the NRM said 4472 would be finished by 2007...

I think we should have learned by now not to set too much store by intended completion dates!

(I don't mean to pick on the GWS, by the way, those were just the first examples that came to mind...)

 

I'm looking forward to seeing it run this year.

 

Somebody making a model then ?? Prediction from reading my tea leaves 2021, if the funds come in.

 

I believe Keef's have said Lyn will be finished in 2014 provided all the money is in place.

The date given was always an aspiration rather than a firm delivery date, and one that was decided before the worst ravages of the current economic crisis hit us all, although I agree the website does need updating. I'll see what I can do to put up some revised information in the next week or so.

 

I believe a wise man would be careful about predictions, Martyn. I have in my possession the original planning spreadsheet for LYD, given to me by Paul Lewin in 1995. It plots the paths by which LYD was to be completed in seven years.
As to your comment about why did I put money into Yeo that I would have been better off spending on my family, I believe in leading by example. Had Yeo survived the collapse of Winsons better, and if the Trust had decided to fund Yeo instead of Axe, I believe an iconic Manning Wardle would once again be the mainstay of services on the L&B, encouraging funders to take the L&B seriously. Clearly you also believed this when you launched LYN in 2006!
As for the comment about 'far in advance of requirements', do you really expect Axe to pull the reconstructed L&B train when it is complete?

Oh, and one other point - you need 100% funding to complete a locomotive. Triumphant calls about 50%, 60%, 70% etc., are irrelevant.

I agree. I have always viewed predictions - however well founded they may be - as merely that, and not considered them fixed. Coming from a military background, I often recall Helmuth von Moltke's (pre-WW1 German Field Marshall) doctrine: "No plan of operations extends with certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy's main strength". In the case of Lyn, and the L&B generally, we are fighting on several fronts as well as the financial one, but - eventually - the L&B Project will prevail.

Actually, I had nothing to do with "launching" LYN in 2006, and maybe you're right, but the decision was made to concentrate on AXE - a task that was finished, I believe in about three years, after many years of deteriortation, deliberation and delay after the loco had been purchased by the L&B. As it turns out, I would say AXE has been a success. As you pointed out, LYD was delayed well beyond its planned delivery date. How far do you think we would we be with YEO now? If it was already complete and in service, then I would say it was a bit of a waste for the short length of track currently in use. 5-10 years from now, things will be very different.

Yes, i do belive AXE will be capable of pulling the two heritage coaches we will have available. Other locomotives are also available to the L&B Trust.

A man rang me today asking what the predicted inflation would be on a project like this.

Have engineering quotes jumped up like the price of road fuel and crude oil ?

Is there any truth in the change in predicted finished cost in excess of £350 K.

Rise in engineering costs over the last 5 years is fairly flat. OK it varies between suppliers, but acceptable rise in overall cost, may be in the order 2% per annum, materials have risen more than that although the overal material content is a small part of the total cost.

So 2% compounded, that might icrease the overall cost over a 5 year period by 11%.

However its not quite like doing the project in house where you can shop around for the best deals on the specific bits you want and get a lot of it done as favours.

No one builds things as cheap and as good as you do it yourself. Of course you need the works and the men to do it and some knowledge.

Whilst it might sound like...... "I bought it off a bloke down the pub", I don't go down the pub and I certainly don't collect stuff in that manner, that is speculative, on your part I would be pleased if you would refain from making suggestions of this manner.

The person concerned who rang me is very credible,I have a great amount of time for him, his source is credible I also know that person and the information suposedly came from the Lyn website?, not like it was plastered everywhere.

I have not gone searching for this info.

That's rather hypocritical of you. Your original post (#35) is speculative and you have not provided any evidence to back up your statements, perhaps you should apply your own rules to yourself before criticising others?
