Couldn't have put it better myself, it's neither pretty nor a brute, and that makes it quite simply hideous.

Bit unfair to call Lyd a 'Southern Monstrosity' considering the Manning Wardles and L&B were around long before the Southern existed, having copper capped chimney's proves they are stylish things and had the misfortune of being absorbed by an inferior railway at the Grouping ;)

We'll quite happily have her at the L&B - with the Transport and Works order in preparation we should have a longer line for her to run on in the future!

The better project would be to return it to it's WW1 as built condition as a recognition of those who suffered/died in the Great War in time for the anniversary in 2014

Says 'Southern' in big letters on the side.

Anyway, I'm only expressing a personal preference. Lets face it, there are strange people who think a Castle is better looking than an A3 <GD&R>.

Seriously, I'd rather have ANY steam engine than none, I just happen to be, for several reasons, particularly fond of Mountaineer.

Wasn't Silly Billy referring to Lyd in that comment, not the Alco? That is how I read it, anyway.
