But staying with the shot after the train had passed on Shap meant that we could see the unusual pattern of the twin exhausts as they slowly dispersed across the sky. So thanks for that.

Yes that was a very good shot. We have already had many views but with each persons 'take' being different, each shot has something else to offer.

Beat me to it Ralph. I think Mark's is the first 'right by the fence' viewpoint, and none the worse for that.

Thanks for the comments guys. I like to be alongside the line wherever possible, just to get the full experience. I can only imagine how great it must have been in the steam days at that location.

Saturday afternoon and evening in the signal box at Scout Green, then sleeping on the back seat of the car parked right by the crossing, 7am bacon cooking on the primus stove. The things that my father forced me to endure before and in my early teens.......

Haven't I thought that so often. All I have are some extremely grotty silent standard 8 film and some recordings on reel to reel at 1 & 7/8 ips. Projector disintegrated years ago and tape recorders that will run at that speed are like hens teeth.

Thanks for all your positive comments they are very much appreciated.

Saturday was for me the best days following and filming of mainline steam for many a year. The conditions were near perfect and to see so many people out at all the locations just shows how much of a crowd puller two Black Fives can be.
Thanks to everyone concerned with making the spectacle work especially the crew of those magnificent locos.
    Regards Phil.

I think we should also give thanks to the weatherman, or gods or whoever.

Snow and frost on the ground, but no precipitation, zero wind and then mist lifted. Almost unprecedented up in them thar hills I'd say - the perfect (non)storm ;)

I'm sure that everyone who was out after stills or video could not believe their luck with the conditions, OK so the mist was about on the return from Carnforth and only cleared around Kirkby Stephen, but where it really mattered it was so perfect.
Roll on next Saturday, forecast is for it to continue cold and clear...

For those interested there should be a pair of 37's over Shap at around 10:00 on "The West Highland Way" to Fort William next weekend also. It's at Preston 09:03-09:09.

Stunning shots here from so many! Haven't seen so many cars/people at Ais Gill and Birkett for many a year. So I've come to the conclusion that it's not the case that there aren't as many enthusiasts (as regular visits to the S&C over the past decade or so have led me to believe), more that most aren't as bothered by what summer offers. You can't blame them - when the weather comes good in winter there is no comparison with even the best summer's day, photographically speaking.

Looking at my newspaper over here "Fort Worth Star Telegram" predicted rain in the forecast. Whichever the situation I'm glad that the weather turned out perfectly for this fantastic event.
