A 6 wheeler around curves that make a tiny Hunslet-Taylor diesel squeal (or was that its driver...) - if I wasn't ensconsed in deepest Hampshire with a Garratt, that'd be something I'd have to see!

Is her wheelbase much longer than Harrogate's, Henry?

    No Ian

Harrogate is 77" and Bronllwyd is 50"

    Thanks, Henry!
It is a long time since I have seen Bronllwyd but I didn't quite imagine that she was anywhere near Harrogate's size. Problem solved, then! She won't really scream at all!
However I can understand why you might want to keep her on the straight, as well as narrow, for the time being. Looking forward to the 18th.

I think the squealing comments related to the suggestion of taking BRONLLWYD onto the garden railway which has considerably sharper curves than the "main line."

    Henry,

I was wondering if you may be able to advise your plans for Bronllwyd now you have her in your collection, if I recall she has a different boiler from original build, fitted at the Penrhyn, are you planning to return her to original condition or leave her in modified Quarry form?

Congratulations on the aquisition to the fleet.

    Regards,

    Rich.

We`re still debating that one Rich!

One thing is certain we will be putting a cab (to the correct design) back on.

We are investigating the possibility of constructing a new boiler , to the original design, to put the engine back to as an original appearance as possible.

The other alternative is to try and make the existing boiler look a bit more like the original (sand box, dome and smokebox) plus the addition of the cab.

Maybe even return to its Surrey County Council identity for a bit.

Watch this space - as the saying goes!

    It was originally.

I understand from Bressingham that they had a new boiler constructed to the same design.

    Thanks for the reply Henry,

I always find this sort of debate quite a hard one, while the loco in many ways deserves to be returned to its original design, the work that the Quarries did on them was, in my opinion, so resourceful to keep them running or make them suitable for a particular application it deserves suitable recognition.

I wonder if there is some way that both could be achieved! Then you would always have the option to run it in PQR livery as well as SCC livery!

All food for thought and I am sure that you guys at Statfold will do a superb job whatever you decide.

I look forward to seeing the results in due course.

    Best regards,

    Rich.

Of course, its rather convenient that Bronllwyd only lost her cab and boiler to Pamela (I think) very late on in the day at Penrhyn, and the boiler from Stanhope was only fitted post preservation at Bressingham. It figures, therefore, that restoration to PQR condition, or to SCC condition, is no more different than a coat of paint, and probably a different set of buffing gear. Either way, I'd be exceptionally happy to see her back as she was, and out of that rather garish red!

At the Stafford Model railway exhibition at the weekend there was a display of Statfold photos which included what I assume was a very recent shot of Bronllwyd presumeably with overhaul completed and now turned out in Surrey CC condition (with cab). I'd not seen anything posted here, so that was a nice surprise that had slipped in under the radar!

Not sure if the red livery is historically correct but it certainly looked to be the usual quality job we'd expect from Statfold.

Anybody got a photo they could post on here?

That's a lot quicker than the original date in September. Trouble is, I can't attend as the Association of 16mm NG Modellers National Garden Railway Show in the same day and, as the show has a Penrhyn theme this year, I just have to be there.

    Hi Chris,

Here are a couple of pictures from Saturday, hope you like them. The Statfold crew have done the usual fine on Bronllwyd!

    Cheers
