I wondered why my pics were getting so many hits on the RPA, and then I doscovered this link. It was in 2003 when I took the pics, and must get up there again to see if anything is still there. I know the Bullied left a while ago, and IIRC the wheels are now running on something else. When I took the pics I made a few enquiries about the locos, and was told that they were part of the collection that had originally been at Hull Dairycoates. The guys that were working on them tired of travelling across the bridge as most of them were based in the Hull area. A lot of the collection including the Black Five, then went to the GCR. I never did find out who actually owns the Crab.

one has to wonder how safe it is.

If its on open display its got to be at risk of a visit by the B road travelling eastern europe immigrant recycling team during the course of their environmental cleansing programme sweeping the country. ?

After all the thieving scrotes off'd an entire engine in the Ukraine once !

From what went on in Barry back in the day i would say the eastern europeans had some good teachers.

It was bought from Dai Woodham by Jim Arkell and I believe it was to be restored in Hull. I was one of a group that had taken an interest in it at Barry. Before learning of it's purchase by Mr Arkell we painted the boiler with aluminium paint and greased and oiled all round for fear of it derailing and the wheels being cut as in the case of KE11 and Galatea . We knew thw boiler and firebox (Horwich original) were suspect but still felt it to be well worth while. I must express my disappointment at it's present state. I don't know what Mr Arkell's present circumstances are but I appeal to him to sell it while he still has something to sell.It is a rare survivor, one of 3 out of a class of 245 handsome (to my eyes) and a useful size loco for any preserved line.With a new build being announced seemingly every other week and people scouring the globe for yet another Stanier 8 F ( I wish them all luck) surely there is a white knight that can ride to the rescue of 42859.

I heartily agree; this locomotive is a rare survivor and it would be so sad to see it lost at this late stage. Clearly the boiler and firebox will need much money and skill but, given what is happening in many projects today, this work is no longer impossible, just costly! I only wish I had the money to buy and restore it but I don't so all I can do is echo "Cauliflower's" remarks.

There have been a few posts on the Forum recently that seemingly give away the identities of loco owners. I wonder if these people have been consulted first? Would you really want what you own being broadcast all over the Internet? Some people are happy that the world knows all about them, others prefer to keep themselves to themselves.

I'm pretty sure that about a year ago, Ace Locomotives, (admin@generalsteamnavigation.co.uk) stated they were custodians of the Hughes mogul on their website. However, the reference to 42859 soon disappeared so perhaps someone at the 35011 General Steam Navigatiion project can help give some info..

In preservation there is now no longer an impossible dream. All can be achieved. And as has been proved lots of people giving small amounts of money can mount up to a lot. So the question is, how many of you would give small amounts every month?

If the owner wanted to let someone take on the restoration of this loco Will you get your Hands dirty?

Even more of a crazy idea is how about it becoming a Nat pres loco. There are enough members on here who if gave £5 per month this is possible. Unfortunately Nat pres does get a bad name for some of its arguments. How about it gave something back?

Then the loco could be hired out to any railway to pay for itself.

Locomotives never really pay for their initial restoration, but they do generally pay for their next overhaul, give or take a bit of fund-raising and share purchasing from interested parties.

1. Given the rarity of the locomotive, I would be prepared to chip in a few quid a month - even though its not a GWR loco!
2. It would depend where the loco was based. I live in the same geographical county but at t'other end!
3. It's not a bad idea for Nat. Pres. to have a "cause to fight for" and I think it might be possible - much depends, however, on ownership as these things have a habit of going pear-shaped if personalities clash and who pays the bills etc.
4. No steam locomotive will ever pay for itself - they are a labour of love, like an E-Type Jag or a de Havilland Tiger Moth. You can make a small fortune by restoring and running a standard gauge steam loco but you must have a huge fortune to start with!

It would look good at the CVR, and with a possible 28 miles it would certainly be able to stretch its legs. And as there are not many locos based at CVR it would also get a lot of use to raise money for its next overhaul.

But of course these are all dreams
