Hello, I am looking to find out some information about shed plates, my dad used to collect them and i have a few from his collection, my query is relating to the back of the plates, some of them have two raised rings around the bolt holes on the back and some of them have raised edges or a sunken middle. Why are the rears of the plates different. is it something to do with where they were cast. Thanks very much in advance.

I would guess that both varieties of raised areas were designed to stop the plate cracking when it was tightened against a curved smokebox door, the differences in the shapes of the areas were probably just down to local practices?

Thanks for your reply. I am more interested in finding
out why some have the round raised bits around the
bolt holes on the rear and others have the sunken middle.
It seems that the plates starting with 8 have the round raised
bits around the bolt holes. Just wondered
    why there different. Thanks

It depends on the patternmaker. Some would make different patterns, depending on where they were cast. I understand that the raised bolt holes were to enable a SC (self cleaning smokebox) plate to be bolted underneath the shedplate. This is held in place by the shedplate proper.

    Kind regards,
    Ian
