Would be nice to see, but in reality I doubt it would ever happen due to that 'old chestnut' - money!!!

    We can but dream.......................

Except that 4496 was garter blue from the beginning according to the RCTS LNER 'Bible'.

I think only 4 or 6 A4 ever carried green (4480-4 or 6), and then only for about a year until blue became the class standard.

I personally feel she should remain as 4492 until her overhaul is due especially after all the time, effort and money spent on the chrome trim, stainless steel letter's and numbers, cabside Coat of Arms and the DoNZ namplates etc.

4464 would be nice however. As for an Apple Green A4 it would be good to see and Apple Green seems to appeal to the public (4472, 60163, 1744 etc). Also wasn't 4489 originally painted Apple Green when she was outshopped as Woodcock (albeit not for very long).

I'll need to check but I think 4489 ran as Woodcock in workshop grey until going back for a repaint and renaming.

Might have the wrong A4 then. I looked on Wikipedia and it says that she had Apple Green wheels but workshop grey and there was about a month before she was renamed and repainted.

Why is it every thread on here seems to turn into (a largely irrelevant) livery debate?

All the facts and speculation have been exhausted. So the only thing left to talk about is paint!

'Tother way round. Workshop grey with green wheels. The subsequent Woodcock, 4493 came out in green.

Was Woodcock one of the green ones to have the large black "smokebox" rather than the usual parabolic curve like the other liveries?

According to the RCTS LNER 'Bible', 4493 was turned out in green but in the standard parabolic style. The ones with the black "smokebox" were 4483-4487.

Iwas wondering, wouldnt it be strange if Bittern is used to Tow Mallard to or from either Burrow Hill or Shilton from York, has an A4 in full valanced condition ever towed another in preservation? In some ways its a shame that Bittern wasnt repainted into the Silver Link Grey livery for Railfest/ the A4 get together then if 4472 and 532 were present along with 163 then you would have every LNER Pacific and in every livery from pre war to withdrawall from service

True, but wasn't 4495 Golden Fleece originally apple green. That would mean that 4496 came within a whisker of being green when first built. Clearly green was the intended livery when the frames were laid down. ;-)
Oh well, that's the closest I can get to justifying 4496 in apple green - apart from the fact it would look great.

4495 was green for about a fortnight and named Great Snipe. She was then recalled to works, repainted blue and renamed Golden Fleece so to be pedantic, 4495 Golden Fleece was never green. It was 4495 Great Snipe that was green. :)

    You're right of course Spamcan81.
I'll accept 60008 as 4495 "Great Snipe" in apple green (even if it has a double chimney).

The question is - will the owner?

Over on the Severn Valley Website Severn Valley Railway - Latest News it says under stop press the owners have advised them the locomotive known as Dominion of New Zealand will now be appearing as 4464 Bittern. There is no mention of valences but I would guess she will still keep them - looks like it is official now.

SVR website now says that all visiting locos confirmed and restated that it will be 4464 Bittern and for people to note the identity change.

Well, you certainly learn some new facts from this forum. A bit late in responding to the above post, but I never realised any A4s were painted apple green in LNER days. I guess that is because most photos you see from that period were in black & white and the only preserved A4s to wear LNER livery have either been painted blue or silver.
