    Morning all

    I have added a few photos of the class 123/124 Trans-Pennine dmu’s

The class 124’s ran over Standedge and used to be 6 car sets with buffet car here
51964 arrives with a 6 car set at Leeds

The units soldiered on a while being reduced to just 4 cars

The 123 units had a corridor front end which made them look completely different from the 124’s

Thanks for these. At a guess TPE would welcome such a unit these days.

Clearly a contender for BR's finest First Gen DMU aesthetically!

There was something pleasing about the appearance of the Class 124 sets. What a shame that none survived. Yes, they were limited to 70mph, but they certainly proved their worth on the Liverpool-Hull services. I have fond memories of 'spotting' at Liverpool Lime Street in the 70s, where they were regular callers, & I also recall they had a regular trip into Blackpool South at one point, in the early evenings, iirc. They looked good in both green and the later blue/grey Inter-City liveries

I remember as a young trainspotting kid on Reading Station around 1960 this "flash" looking DMU trundled through the up relief platform. Transpires it was a brand new Trans-Pennine unit on delivery or on test from Swindon. Put all the local surburban/cross country units to shame, as much as DMU's were hated at the time.

Thankyou for the pictures,I remember my first ride on one from Hull to leeds when young and I was surprised they had compartments in the motor brake second class coaches compared to the bus type arrangement in other DMU's.The one thing i didn't like was that the behind the driver view ahead seats were first class at both ends.It was sad to see first the buffet cars removed reducing them to 5 car formations and then reduced to 4car sets.

My memory of these units is slightley different. They operated in service for a while in the London Division (the gang-wayed ones) presumably on Oxford services. I had a bit of a shock one day when one of them rammed a PMV into the bufferstops on platform 7! I was stood only a few feet from it.

I remember those in the mid 70's. They suddenly disappeared to be replaced by loco hauled trains, the forerunner NSE services.

I would see these units when spotting on Manchester Victoria in 1960 and recall how strange it was to see a DMU with a
headboard on the front! 'Trans Pennine'. I don't think it was a board as such, probably just a transfer.

I recall, for a short period during the 60's,a shortage of 124s,for Transpennine service and 2 x 3 car units of another class, (possibly 119/120) with one middle car of one unit in each pair, having a mini buffet, being used as substitutes. If you wanted refreshments, especially an early morning coffee on the way into Manchester from Ashton/Stalybridge, you had to make sure you boarded the unit with the buffet car.

There is, apparently, a photo of one of these units at Llangollen, on a railtour, sometime after closure to regular traffic. Must see if I can get hold of a copy.
