Operations being the operative word - there will be two independant operations within a very short distance, and one of those will potentially be operating two sites until they are joined.

true but when you consider this...

    Welshpool-Chirk : 21 miles
    Chirk-Llangollen : 7 miles
    Carrog-Bala : 15 miles
    Bala-Ffestiniog : 19 miles
    Beddgelert-Llanberis : 14 miles
    Llanberis-Betws-y-coed : 16 miles
    Llanberis-penrhyn Quarry : 9 miles
    Llanuwchllyn - Abergynolwyn : 19 miles
    Abergynolwyn - Corris : 7 miles
    Tywyn-Fairbourne : 11 miles
    Corris - Aberystwyth : 24 miles

as a enthusiast I love the amount of different railways, looking at it from a holiday makers point of veiw there is too much choice and passengers dont go to more than one railway...

I do however like Andrews comment that he suggests doing the FR then the year after the first bit of the WHR then the year after the other bit. so Andrew if passengers are spending three years sampling all your delights what do the rest of us do whilst your monopolising the Market and industry?

A list of railway attractions 'near' Woody Bay was compiled.

    Here are the ACTUAL DISTANCES

    Buckfastleigh 73 miles
    Helston 117 miles
    Lappa 109 miles
    Plym Valley 97 miles
Devon railway centre is just a theme park
    pecorama extended shop
    Yeovil Railway Centre 82 miles
    Bodmin 80 miles

    Hardly on the doorstep

"so Andrew if passengers are spending three years sampling all your delights what do the rest of us do whilst your monopolising the Market and industry"

Do a Vivarais if you are not careful

Mr Lynton if you don't what to go to the Glyn Valley don't go ITS your decision, the rest of us will do as we like. I will go and give them my support! As for the FR/WHR, our last visit to the FR was so bad my wife said she will never go again, customer service courses would be a good thing.

I frequently take the WHR/RhE as do many friends. We can only say that at all times we have been treated with kindness and courtesy. We wonder if Locomotion is getting lost? Harbour Station post code for GPS is LL49 9NF. You will know when you get there because they have some strange engines with two faces and some with two backsides.:peace:

Yes I was. Changes in spelling tend to pass me by, and I don't use metric either (except 4mm to the foot). I guess what you learn in your formative years just sticks. I have managed to commit Caernarfon instead of Carnarvon to my memory.

As I have learned since I moved here, Wales is an extremely 'local' place. There is not much mileage between Caernarfon, Portmadoc and Blaenau Ffestiniog but they are like different worlds. People in Holyhead refer to Anglesey as 'the mainland'. So, distances here mean a lot more than they do elsewhere. And tourists soon find out how long it takes to get from one place to the other as well. I don't think the GVT will do any damage at all to the railways in Gwynedd, any problems it has will be in competition with the attractions within say 20 miles of it.

At this time of year the earliest train from Birmingham that connects to Tywyn is the 06:24 from New Street, which would get you to Tywyn at 09:29. The next is the 08:24 arriving 11:26 and the service continues at two-hour intervals throughout the day until the 18:24 arriving at 21:43. Trains in the opposite direction run at 07:16, 08:18, 09:30, and then every two hours until 19:27, which would get you to New St by 22:33.

Ergo it is perfectly possible to have a day out on the Talyllyn starting from Birmingham using Arriva Trains Wales to get you to Tywyn and back.

I guess it depends on where you are coming from. If you use the AA route planner site for Birmingham - Tywyn and Birmingham - Port, it comes up with 120miles/2h48mins for the former and 128miles / 2hr 51min for the latter. Being more familiar with Tywyn and usually coming from the E or SE, I have always thought Portmadoc was the more remote. Perhaps the marginal difference in time is accounted for by flooring it along the straight section through Traws? If one comes from the NW, I agree it looks a bit different.
