Honestly, do you think they would have continued with a cracked cylinder. It amazes me the crap some people come out with.

Another great job by the 5305 support team, well done chaps, great work!!

As I said, this was from the loco's support crew, so I can only take their word for it! The loco certainly had the piston out during the day and had the pistion ring has been changed (the crew said it was just the piston ring which had failed, not a cracked piston/cylinder), and had been reassembled by 2pm this afternoon. If you don't want to believe what i've said , that's your choice, but this info is from my own eyeballs & ears!

Have you been to the location in question? Do you know the focal length needed to obtain the results as posted on YouTube?

If they have managed a repair in that short time, then the support crew deserve a good few beers all round!

Well done if she is up and running!

I will keep my mouth shut from now on. You cannot post anything on this forum without some jumped up know it all jumping down your neck. I was just repeating what had been written on YT, I made no reference to what was believable and or correct. I just thought she sounded poorly.

I am glad it was not something that took long to repair. That was how I felt initially though.

Here in Fort Worth of all place we have a tourist line called the Grapevine Scenic railroad. Only one operable steamer many many years go the Cylinder On Southern Pacific 2248 broke down and the engine has been sidelined ever since. A new manager though has just come in and has goals to bring her back to her glory. He has Prior experience and knowledge of how she operates.

Please please please, get a life. Health and safety is regarded amongst most in the modern world as way over the top. Why do you automatically assume that the clip is filmed from the "wrong" side. Even if he was, he was clearly no threat to his own health and safety nor for that matter anyone else.

Just look at the old videos such as the first steam hauled train over Sapperton for almost 20 years in 1985 when a Hall 4-6-0 struggled up the bank. There were hundreds of people of everywhere including dozens the "wrong" side. Oh how I wish that common sense could return. After all, a train is a train, a photographer is a photographer and if he can stand "wrong" side in 1985 he should be allowed to in 2012.

Get a load of this and enjoy.

Hi, All, Just read through the posts. I was on the train, and it was a real disappointment that Olly failed, because we'd had a storming run from the Cross. Best departure from Stevenage ever! Having never travelled a lot of the route before, and not having consulted the RTC booklet in detail, I don't know the name of the bank we climbed before Scunthorpe, but it was a magnificent ascent, and after Said station it was head-out-of-window heaven! My compliments to the crew. Names, anyone? As far as I know, the dirty diesel came on in Worksop Yard, but did not assist. As to trespass, well, there was a fair bit, but I didn't see anything dangerous. Probably the first sight of a proper train with a proper locomotive for some time?

The level of muppetry on NP just gets better every day. It appears we are now blessed with 'engineers' who can diagnose loco failures from a few seconds of video footage and snappers who think it's still 1985. Clearly with such brilliant minds at its disposal the future of main line steam is in safe hands.

Steam locos are pretty resilient things. A cracked cylinder is unlikely to stop it in the short term. In the last few years I've known a certain Black 5 do several hundred miles with a crack running the full length of the bore and 76079 has been doing just that quite recently. Quite a few locos have cracked cylinders but continue in use. It depends on the crack.

It amazes me the crap some people come out with, as well.

I'm having trouble getting into the 5305 locomotive association's web site. Is there a new article there to read? Can somebody cut and paste it if there is? Thanks.
Note: I don't want a link because I will have the same problem as I mentioned above.

Seconded, im sick of the NP stuck record of people accusing others of trespass without knowing the location and technical diagnosis based on a youtube clip which will have sweet fa bearing on how logn the loco is out of traffic, come on guys were better than this.
