Peak Rail General Discussion

My copy of the OS map clearly shows the Peak Park boundary as the River Derwent at the point were the line enters the Peak Park.

on a similar vein of thought, having worked on various heritage lines over the years -the subject of walkways for public through tunnels and joint railway operation is something which carefully would need planning, i remember well being inside a relatively short flat tunnel on one heritage line follwong a light engine move through to have to suffer a near choking fit afterwards from the fine smoke particles.

one would think the planners in head offices would like to look at their risk assessments for combining rail and public in a confined area or better still go and have a go personally to see what we mean!, still this depends on how much chance the cat in hell has off the two ever happening as you say.

 

done a bit more s&t at riverside today,mostly snagging works and finishing rodding/wiring etc.

called in at Rowsley, Ben and Will were busy removing the buffers on 7991, the steel sided LMS coach, the chasis is having major rebuilding attended to,with some fabrication of parts already started.

Harvey was talking me through the work hes doing on a goods van in the LMSCA and all the work required to reskin this as well as taking its sides back to the original framework, lastly I had a chat with the Class 50 lads, who were rebuilding/repairing the grills and sides of one of the locos while its dry,they had quite a good turnout.

Is there an expected completion date for the Class 50 (Class 50's)?

 

I suspect that it would be difficult to combine a new rail line alongside the cycleway/footpath. It is one thing having a shared use such as on the Avon Valley heritage line, and quite another to have traffic running at line speed on the new line, which would inevitably include the heavy traffic from the quarries, traffic that I assume currently goes south by taking the Hope Valley line at Chinley, and then Dore South, Chesterfield etc . To still accommodate the trail, the rail line would need to be single track for the length of the trail and that in itself brings issues.
The tunnels would surely not be useable for cycles/pedestrians, and the Monsal trail would have to revert to the route used prior to the opening of the tunnels. Further, having cycled the trail, I do wonder about some of the structures along the line, what state are they in? particularly the metal viaducts at Millers Dale which looked quite decrepit and rusty. Ok for pedestrians, but rail traffic?

Pete was back at it today,fettling more ex rusty bits of signalling back into useable items,plus lever lock work.

Friday and Monday,Elliot,John and myself continued with Riverside works, track circuiting for a change, wwere now onto the lever frame works, Pete has been busy fettling yet more parts up for us too.

Elsewhere called in to chat with Ben on the progress on the LMS metal bodied coach, heaps more rust removed from the frames and sides,buffers removed etc,allowing him to get underneath at all the parts,slow but thorough progress from the boss,when he gets time hes also working on signs ,running in boards etcetera for the stations along the line to go up later in the year.

aside from that i note from my bike ride on the Monsal trail over the weekend that some of the valley side trees near Monsal Dale have been felled to improve the views ,looks great looking down on the Mills below now, very busy with the warm weather too.

Although the 'Peak Forester' is still advertised by the Railway Touring Co., on the 27th of May, It's not highlighted as a special occasion on the PR timetable..

No news page at all on the site actually -another missed opportunity - as you say, very sad but all too typical.

 

Ive sent a request to the boss see if something suitable could be added to the website, a mention would be very good especially as lots of enthusiasts view the websites and forums.

 

Unfortunately this has been seen on several railways that have replaced sites created by the volunteers with 'corporate' sites that never change, have no information for enthusiasts and don't advertise events that they don't directly control.

When Harvey (and myself to some extent) ran the Peak Rail site that Harvey started way back we were always updating the news, project progress (such as the 8F, LMSCA etc) and stock pages. As such it was a very popular site with Joe public and enthusiasts alike and likewise with the closed Yahoo message board. It wasn't just active members but also members of public and armchair members asking how the projects were going. OK it got a little excitable at times and criticism of the management resulted in the typical knee-jerk reaction and the Yahoo board was closed down.

It's a fact of life now that heritage movements MUST keep feeding the public with information. Facebook and Twitter have shown just how quickly information can go stale. We are already facing a shortage of volunteers and those we have are ageing (I include myself in that!).

have been informed that there will be a mention put on the PR website for the incoming charter soon, the website is currently about to have a revamp too,so some of your ideas and suggestions have been duly noted,

small update;

John,Pete and myself with help from James fitted the lever frame and lock supports under Riverside today,as well as marked out the locking straps and returned them back to Rowsley to get them drilled for next week, we also had a go at some more stores clearing up work.

Chatted with Mr Briddon whose cracking on with Libby the shunter, lots of new pipework,and much priming ongoing under the engine, also noted Ben has been hard at fettling and repainting the frames on the steel sided LMS COACH,apart from that noted the LMSCA,CLass 50 and HST lads knocking around working on their shed

 

Ive been asked to let you all know that the turntable will be in operation this Sunday from 12.15 to 3.15p.m demonstrating the turning of a diesel locomotive.

Congratulations to Peak Rail. Website revamped, 2012 brochure available, 'Peak Forester' advertised, turntable demos arranged, bacon 'butties' on the menu; what more can we ask?

As the Bakewell extension is part in the PDNPA and part DDDC two planning apps will be required. However, the A6 bridge is in DDDC territory and could be incorporated in that app. and erected in phase 1.

It would be good if PR could afford to do that..
