No offense, but, I think this really defines the difference between "preservation" and " playing trains" What on earth would be the point of building a Star and fitting it with longer frames and a Collett Cab? Would it BE a Star? Would it look like a Star? No it would look a bit like a de-tuned Castle but it wouldn't BE a Castle either! Building a replica Star to run on the main line is a much better idea than wrecking Lode Star by returning it to steam, but if it isn't an accuarate replica, then what is the point? I bet 90% of people would want it in BR livery too

What does a Star look like!
I have a book Portraits of Western 4-6-0's, no two Stars look the same, no outside steampipes elbow steampipes and Castle ones, different cabs different positions of reversing screws.
My musing about a Collett cab is due to thinking about conditions for the crews on the footplate in bad weather.
No it wouldn't be a de-tuned Castle put on a Churchward cab and you have got a pretty authentic Star replica, a Castle is a tuned up Star.
My idea was to make the point that this would be more acceptable on heritage lines than a 47xx, and quite a bit lighter than a Castle.
Wouldn't upset the pway guys either.

    Cheers Dave

I recall when 5080 was finished.....the two row superheater remained on 5080; 5043 is 4-row as per clun castle and 7027 has an un restored 3-row.

Be good to see 7027 back one day.
