Large diesel loco at Brecon?

I have just read in Railway Magazine that Brecon Mountain Railway has acquired from Russia a large diesel
loco,which has been totally stripped down for overhaul,but will need regauging. This is news to me.I hope
it's a Tu-2, I would love to see one of these running in the UK.

The magazine also says that progress is being made on the second Baldwin (15511/1897).The chassis is
about complete and work on the boiler will be done this year.

I have also just watched the Michael Portillo British Railway Journey programme that featured the Brecon Railway,
great footage of the Baldwin No2. Tony Hills was interviewed and stated he still intends to complete the track
extension and put more engines and coaches into service.

Not a Tu-2, but a Tu-7 from Latvia, it has been in the country for (at least) approaching two years.

Sure, the TU2 is very popular. I would think so popular that it would be difficult to find one to buy and export.
Further, the Soviet narrow gauge diesels TU1 - TU3 are diesel electrics with axle hung electric traction motors.
Thus it would be impossible to change the gauge from current 750 mm to 600 or 2 ft.

But the diesels TU4 - TU10 are all shaft driven diesels with the identical bogies that can easily be converted to smaller gauge.
In Mariefred, Sweden we have just taken our fully rebuilt and overhauled (new diesel engine, 600 mm gauge etc.) TU4 into service. It is a 200 hp diesel hydraulic built in 1973.

This is TU4-3147, it was in service at the big diesel workshop in Gaivoron, Ukraine until 1995.

The TU7 is more modern and with 400 hp. These locomotives are very robust and the running qualities are just superb!

The attached gives quite a bit of information on TU7's working in cuba (SG and NG)The Cuban TU7E pages

There is also a link to further information on TU1/TU2's and other countries.

With closure of most mills with NG systems, There are certainly a few spare NG TU7's lying around in Cuba in varying states of repair, but the bill to get them to the UK might be a bit steep.

We were able to see 2 of them in action at the 14th July mill in Feb of this year, including a cab ride (for about 15 of us!) from the mill out to a loading point and back.
