Here's an interesting one for the historians among us:-

There are a good few locos which went straight into preservation and were chosen not only because they were represntatives of a class of engine which was worth preserving, but also because they were particularly outstanding members of that class - either because of one particular run (or series of runs) or because they were generally known as "good uns." Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Pendennis Castle, City of Truro, Hardwicke, Sir Lamiel and Cheltenham are good illuystrations of this.

By contrast, the locos sent to Barry have been preserved basically because Dai Woodham didn't cut them up. They are a pretty random group, but there are some which were highly regarded in their BR days (and earlier in some instances) 34092 City of Wells and 5043 Earl of Mount Edgecumbe are two examples that I can think of. Are there any others?

    Sole survivor????

    Only if you exclude 3803, 35018, 60022.

That makes four survivors, and that's only from memory without checking.

Wasn't 61264 supposed to be quite a favourite when it was shedded at Parkestone?

35022 went like hell according to a couple of books I've read recently by Nine Elms men.

That was a rumour started when there was a fund going to preserve it. I remember one of the Bournemouth line drivers remarking on that at the time. Wasn't our best engine was his take on it. I don't think he meant it was bad, just that it wasn't particularly outstanding.

Yes, in the latter days out of the ones that ended up at Barry 35010 and 35022 were the ones. 35011 was known as a very strong engine, but not particularly fast. 35003 was the fastest, but of course it didn't make it to Barry.

Well, Dick Hardy remembers it as one of the better ones. He's mentioned it several times.

Oh Wikipedia - That fountain of knowledge and innovation - NOT

I put some original stuff on there (and corrected some mistakes) and it was all deleted and I was flamed for putting material up that was not already published elsewhere and therefore "not verifiable". Complete waste of time.

5051 Drysllywyn Castle/ Earl Bathurst was very highly regarded by the Staff at Landore, both in GW days and BR. She was sheded at Landore from 1936 when she was built right up to 1962, and apparently all the Shedmasters at Landore wanted her returned after she had been to Swindon. I get the impresion that the staff at Landore would do without a Castle as long as they got 5051 back. She had/has a reputation as being a slogger, very much a hill climber. But she can also go quite quickly when required

Wikipedia's rail coverage is poor overall (much worse than, say, its cricket coverage) but since accreditation is not required to edit it, if they didn't require references you'd get even more random/rubbish info being added than already is!

I know that 34105 Swanage wasn't considered very good in BR days, thats why theres lots of shots of her on inter-regional trains casue her being away was less of a problom then sending out a good one...

The problem is, they like you to reference every word you type. I've been known to dabble in my spare time on some of the Southern locomotive articles. Whether they are any good I'll leave it to you to decide. Just don't hurt my feelings! ;)
