The northbound train is using the regular charter path. However, outhbound, there is a passenger train, followed by a freight (aluminium) and then the sleeper, which runs 50mins earlier on a Sunday. All these are regular timetabled trains.

Do the sums and you'll see there isn't much choice.

    Hi Martin
Berwick loop north of Border bridge as normally engine cuts off on the bridge and drifts into station then loop.
Gresley did do a bit off the bridge last year

Berwick loop is north of the station

Electrified Glasgow to Ayr - previous charters have worked smokebox south

James - noted so far as operations go, but it doesn't change the situation as far as getting something to eat on arrival goes - Fort William will have closed up at that time so its hotel overtime or nothing - OK for full dining - but a problem for everyone else. I trust the Monday morning timing is a leisurely one.

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

I'm beginning to have a fair amount of sympathy for the RTC who are imaginative enough to try something unusual and are then rewarded with a poor path that, no doubt, will inconvenience hoteliers with late arrivals and make it difficult for anyone not eating on the train. I just hope that Steam Dreams is monitoring this issue as I have a vested interest in the Explorer not turning into a daily marathon for non-diners.

Maybe put in a Tesco stop during the day so that people can stock up with some grub to eat at the end of the day. The Great Britain is becoming a national institution and these practical difficulties are there to be overcome!

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

Or indulge in a little self help...............

On the West Highlander in 2010, given the 05.00 out of bed, we had a second breakfast booked in advance at the Crianlarich Hotel whilst others dozed or ambled around the village whilst we took water over around an hour and a quarter - it was about four hours after we had last eaten - and very good it was too! The Crianlarich stop is nicely timed to co-incide with High Tea.

I don't know anything about the Moor of Rannoch Hotel - but this smells like an opportunity to make a killing for them. I'm sure that if ND gives them a ring and asks for a price to cater of about 150 (probable non diner contingent) he'll get a very marketable quote. 01882 633238 email bookings@moorofrannoch.co.uk

We have arranged for non dining Customers to be offered Dinner at extra cost due to the late arrival into Fort William

We have also ased GBRF if they could retime this freight. so as to allow a much earlier arrival
We are still awaiting a reply
There is nothing more we can do

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

As Nigel says, I can only ask for a re-time of the aluminium (which I have) but GBRf are under no obligation to give it; the position would be the same, regardless of operator (or promoter). You are right - it is a shame that some imaginative plans do not always translate into workable plans but that is nature of the beast, as Uncle Frank always reminds you!

I didn't know that James Shuttleworth and T Bird Frank were related.Perhaps that explains some of the answers we get.

    Gollum or Galadriel???

    - and the late dinner is a welcome and worthwhile gesture for the non diners - but if I were on board and circumstances remain as they are, it would be dinner at Rannoch, and an Aperitif at the Grog.

I presume the Mallaig the following day will run to "early" Jacobite times - so no silly o' clock after a few Isle of Skyes!

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012?

Interesting. Given GWR4090's comments above, I wonder if those really are the final final-times, now?

I've spotted one small typo - I think the departure time from Edinburgh for train one, day two should be the same as for train two, day two and not the same as the Kings X time on day one.

8:15 from Bristol on Day 8 means GBV should be about an hour ahead of the Earl, by my reckonning.

It's a shame if the train has been diverted off of Beattock. This according to UK Steam.
RYTC's website still says Beattock is in the program though.

All timings i've seen would suggest GSW,Beattock isn't really that brilliant southbound anyway? Mauchline-Polqhuap (or however you spell it) should be good.
