Looks like a class 70 caught fire between Basingstoke & Winchester blocking the line. The smoke seems to be issuing from the loco.

if it was a proper engine the fire would be making it go!

Best thing that can happen to a Class 70 if you ask me. :)

The only redeeming feature of 70's is at least they aint more bloody 66's.

I heard a quote that the fire has caused over £300'000 of improvements to the loco.

I think class 70's should now be banned from the network due to delays caused by this fire:tape:

Its made by GE --so it s prone to catch fire - a known concern on this side of the world . In fact I saw a CN ES44DC with fire damaged engine compartment doors only yesterday , keep your extinguishers handy ... lol

It is quite funny to see the universal hatred of the class 70s (especially with the almost 100% hatred of it's styling), just think in 30 - 40 years from now there will be the class 70 society raising funds to preserve one!

I like the 70's, there better looking than 66, it is just my opinion (though I think SR Q1s look good). Will this mean a stop to all working for a while and will they have to be modified so they don't catch fire?

Perhaps some work for 55022 although Deltics have their own history with fires.

I don't think GM (General Motors) will be involved as the class 70s are built by GE (General Electric). Two totally different companies.

Full marks for top quality speculation :) If every class of diesel loco that caught fire was withdrawn pending investigation, there would be none running!! :)
