    I think we are talking at cross purposes here. My post was about the preservation era. Your's is about the BR era.

    Actually the rules now in force are based on the BR era. The reason they are not implemented as such is because the people currently responsible haven't actually understood the rules. It's been common practice for some time now to adopt a routine of seven years, up to ten, and as a result it has become the default standard which no-one questions. And of course its suits most people to continue in this fashion. But that doesn't make it correct. It will change in due course, but that's pretty much where we are at present.

    One of the big differences between normal service usage and the present day, is that locomotive boilers rarely made it to even five years. A careful read through some of the engine and boiler records reveal this to be so. There were in fact passenger engines that were getting boiler lifts typically between 18 and 30 months apart. Nowadays the boilers are generally facing less wear and tear, apart from the corrosion aspect and the damage caused by frequent heating and cooling. So it's understandable things will change.

    55 Stepney must of had at least 3 possibly 4. She went straight into traffic from BR so that doesn't count, then i can think of 3 periods of running, the late 80's and early 90's, her overhaul in 1998 and then her most recent overhaul in 2010. so that's certainly 3, did she have another in between the 60's & 70's and her period of running in the late 80's/early 90's??

    Other Bluebell based engines that could be possible contenders are;

    323 - again has to be at least 3 if not 4...
    592 - at least 3
    263 - her current overhaul would be her 3rd?

    Interested to see if anyone can confirm any of this?? Or think of others i have missed

    Also what about 76079?

    With 76079 and 45407 things start to get blurred because Ian Riley was giving them intermediate overhauls at shorter intervals, and the NYMR is currently doing the same with 76079. 76079, though was an ex-Barry engine and didn't steam till the early '80s, I think, so can't have had that many "10 year" overhauls.

    I would have thought that 62005 would be a contender having been running just about all the time for years on end. Its been on the jacobite for years and been NELPGs earner in that regard. Green Arrow and Scotsman must be up there too....

    And would have thought Leander might be worth considering...

    I'm not familiar with 6201's preservation history but perhaps she's up there as well?
