UP 844 Wheel problems

Taken from a thread on Railroadforums.com -- UP 844 has run into some wheel problems, after the trailing diesel unit got stuck in run 8 - causing the steamer to be pushed with its brakes on, causing wheel flats .. apparently wheels are being taken out & sent for profiling .

Edit -- there is video s up on You Tube of it in Mt Pleasant TX -- with people grinding the wheel flats !

Good to see the wheel sets are now coming out for tyre turning!

Some interesting stuff appearing on the linked forum regarding interfacing between the steam loco and diesel, which allegedly caused the flats by pushing the steam loco whilst the brakes were on. Mind you most of it it well over my head!

 

Thanks for adding addition links on this subject -- I too was amazed looking at the guys with grinders on the driving wheels
