  3. Nice to see a discussion here about this event but <pedant> I should point out it is a Mixed Traction Weekend (not "Traffic") </pedant>

...although to be fair, the railway has called it a 'mixed traffic weekend' for a number of years...! :) WSR :: West Somerset Railway :: Mixed Traffic Weekend 2007

(I personally think 'mixed traction' sounds far better!)

  7. Absolutely right! I think it took a while for the WSR to realise the difference. At least it's right now.

I'd prefer the WSR to have a dedicated diesel event (or two) each year. But steam is needed on every weekend throughout the long season (brings in more revenue) so that'd push a diesel-only event to the shoulders of the year when it is colder (supposedly!) and I believe the home-based diesels have no means to steam heat the coaching stock.

More details of the WSR Mixed Traction Gala on 15-17 June 2012 have now been published. The event is due to feature eight diesel locomotives D832, D1010, D1661, D6566, D6575, D7017 and GBRf will be providing a class 66 and a Class 73. Steam 6960 and 7828 will work at the weekend. There will be a "Driver for a fiver" activity at Minehead, brake van rides on the freight train which will run over the full line on all three days (must be pre-booked). FGW will be running a Taunton-Bishops Lydeard shuttle on Saturday and Sunday.

I remember drawing attention to this traction/traffic issue a while ago on the WSR forum. I'm glad to see that the Railway has also seen the light!

  10. Update:

GBrF 66 and class 73x2 plus a heritage diesel (55022 - to be confirmed) Mixed Traction Weekend 2012. West Somerset Railway

    Steve

  11. Steamers will be chimney-first both ways on Sat & Sun - nos 6960 and 7828 will be turned on the Triangle (inner I assume) and the turntable. A first for the WSR!

Norton section looks like it'll be busy as FGW are running a Taunton-Bishops Lydeard shuttle.

  12. News from WSR: "Class 55 no 55022 Royal Scots Grey has been added to the Mixed Traction Weekend line up of visiting engines"

    Event is held 15, 16 & 17 June 2012.

This promises to be a great weekend. If only the Hymek was working on Saturday! It's the only loco on the list that I both want to ride behind, and haven't yet managed to bag.
I'm neither criticising, nor grumpy, but as the WSR is a good two and a half hour drive from me, and Saturday's my only day off that weekend, I'll probably save the pennies and the wear & tear on me and my car by sitting this one out - but I'll keep watching the updates in case the roster changes!
I hope the WSR has arranged good weather!

This weekends working timetable has had to be drastically modified due to the non appearance of the GBRf class 66.
The good news is that a second GBRf class 73 will attend. <BJ>

  16. The WSR are still selling tickets on the basis of the 66 appearing (see their website) so perhaps it is about time we had some official news on this?

From the WSR official website. (It's rather strange but I was studying a copy of the revised timetable on Monday).

''We have been advised by Great British Railfreight that because of other commitments they are unable to release a Class 66/7 for the Mixed Traction Weekend . An extra Class 73, number as yet unknown, will be coming in its place but this does mean that the timetables will be altered and published as soon as possible''.

Boy do I miss the old wsr.org website. Hint hint Steve. <BJ>

  18. Sorry <BJ> but the info stream just dried up I hope you'll understand it couldn't continue without regular comms from the WSR.

Hope the line-up still appeals and that everyone enjoys the event.
