Have just returned for a day on the NYMR. Apart from the trains running 30 minutes late from the start it seemed a decent day out. Not as many people about today. Onlything that let me down was my camera lenses failing meaning digital camera had to do. (photos on flckr. - video to follow.)

Probably worth pointing out that 75029 will be on Battersby duty again this coming Sunday - proved pretty popular last Sunday, complete with rather cheeky headboard (which came as a free gift with a loco purchase!).

Although a regular between Grosmont and Whitby, 75029 hasn't done that many Battersby runs as there has usually been some thing deemed more "interesting". With a longer period of Northern running a summer service possible from next year, there could be a very limited number of Gala days when the Battersbys run in future.

Steven - can you advise whether the 11.03 from Grosmont to Battersby in a connection out of the 11.03 arrival from Pickering on Sunday? Seems like rather a bad bit of timetabling if it isn't, especiially as, on it's return from Battersby, the train sits at Glaisdale for 20 mins awaiting the arrival of the Pullman.

    Hi,

Does anyone know when Bittern Is due to leave the moors after the gala? As 70000 is down for the 15th May but there's nothing on Bittern as of yet.

It certainly worked last week as we were about 10 down out of Whitby and 75029 needed to take water at Grosmont, which is the whitby side of the water column.

I will however check as it isn't me on it this week!

Just to confirm - 09:50 ex-Pickering (arrive Grosmont 11:03) should connect with 1st Whitby to Battersby according to Control - that is, barring longer delays to the former than the latter!

Why is it only in Gala Sundays that trains run through to Battersby? Sureley you can get a path through on Fridays and Saturdays as well if you pass the Northern rail train at Glaisdale.

Is there any news re 60007? Bean Counter was quite positive about it running this weekend!

Answering my own question the NYMR's website shows the loco. roster for tomorrow as featuring 60007.

I rode the rails on Sat and Sun of the first weekend and had a thoroughly good time in spite of the weather and the delays, even when stuck at Levisham for an hour and a half on the Saturday (there are far worse places to be stuck after all, and the Signalman kept me posted on the next train - thank you). On Monday I got a couple of good shots of Bittern and the 2-6-4 from the bench on the hill above Levisham station and Britannia from Skelton Tower (no idea how to post them here because I got them on my mobile).

Slightly disapponted with the freight on Saturday (Joem plus 4) but I guess coal is very expensive at the moment and a shorter freight will burn less coal and use less water. I wish I'd known that the freight would run again on the Monday - I would have changed my plans accordingly, and walked Levisham moor and the Hole of Horcum on Sunday instead. A bit more info ahead of time would have been good but I'm loth to be critical of what was a good effort overall. Thanks for all the efforts of all concerned - looking forward to the Autumn Gala already.
