Is there a motive power change? 46233 is due on at Hellifield after running E+C from Crewe on Saturday morning (UK Steam info tour times). UK Steam info update today for LE movements indicates 46233 now going Crewe - York E+C on 02.06.12.

That's going to be popular with the crew isn't it. Any news yet as to what has caused the delay?

By my reckoning (and I am open to be challenged upon this), currently undocumented WCML diversions apart, Saturday's trip was the first northbound working over the Settle & Carlisle line by a green-liveried Coronation pacific in over half a century! (On 9th July 1961, No 46247 'City of Liverpool worked the Leeds-Carlisle leg of an RCTS special.)

Let's hope there are now many more to follow ....... and, hopefully, in better lighting conditions!

46247 was maroon at the time.

    Re: Green Duchesses

Yes, you’re absolutely right. Of course, 46247 City of Liverpool was another of the (admittedly superb looking) BR red Coronations! The memory cells of this old git are apparently well on their way towards extinction, for I must have seen that particular engine hundreds of times during my spotting years and actually do have pictures of it as well …. although not on that particular RCTS tour of 9 July ’61.

Thanks, too, to Mike T and Barry H for contacting me by e-mail to point out my little gaffe and even to remind me of 46255 City of Hereford’s southbound journey over the line on 12 July 1964 … I recall that trip in particular as I did photograph the northbound leg of the SLS tour (that ran northwards over Shap) with a very, very shiny red 46251 City of Nottingham.

We are in a bit of a quandary now, however, for there does not appear to be a record of any green ‘semi’ at all working northwards over the S&C, specifically on a special. I suppose that we will just have to accept that there was probably at least one used on the occasional diverted WCML regular expresses of that period, and before the class as a whole got the chop in ’64. But, WHO knows actually WHEN?? No doubt someone will know.

Anyway, whatever the answer, Saturday's trip seems to have produced the very first northbound green class member to appear in "around" half a century! Despite the poor light prevalent that day, I am glad I was there to witness it!
