    Authentic Combinations

    Hi everyone,

Apologies if this thread has already been started, I can't see any thread like this on Nat Pres Forum (have looked for quite a while now and can't find one!). If there is one already set up, then I am more than happy for this thread to be deleted.

In the past couple of years, I have noticed that heritage railways (and a lot of touring companies) across the country are trying to match locomotives with authentic coaches and freight sets. For example, at the Severn Valley and North Yorkshire Moors Railway, they matched A4 4464 Bittern with a rake of LNER Teak coaches. Torbay Express Ltd have matched 6024 with a rake of 'choc and cream' Mk1s and Pathfinder Tours put 70000 Britannia (in BR dark green) with a rake of 'blood and custard' Mk1s over the Settle and Carlisle.

This got me thinking, and wondered how many authentic locomotive and coaching stock combinations there have been over the years, on both heritage railways and on the national network. I was also thinking about locations too, although this is not as 'important' as the authentic pairing theme. If you would like to post any photographs or videos of an authentic combination, then please do - I'm sure we would all like to see your work. I will post a couple of images and a link to one of my own videos a bit later, when I get on my computer.

I look forward to seeing any photographs that are posted.

The NNR has achieved some authentic pairings in recent years:

Two very nice shots SteveA. The first shot caught the eye in particular with the sun trying to come out and the steam drifting.

As said in the first post, here are a couple of examples taken by myself in the past few years:

Above: Large Prairie 4160 stands at Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway waiting for the off. Authentic loco/coach combination? I reckon so.
Below: BR 9F 92212 and 34007 Wadebridge climb out of Ropley at Rook Wood. If you added a Pines Express headboard, could this be a scene off of the S&D in 1959? Maybe between Bath and Midford? :)

I also thought I would add a link to a video on YouTube (my own clips):

Erlestoke Manor drifts into a GW station (Bridgnorth) with a GW freight set whilst GW coaching stock sits in the other platform. (Not sure if this counts as it was taken from the vantage point of the Flying Pig... not quite so GW!).

And 6024 King Edward I pulls out of Highley with a set of ex GW vehicles.

Any photo taken at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway with W24 Calbourne and any of the bogie coaches.

The correct engine and correct coaches on the railway that they were used on.

Also W8 Freshwater with the 4-wheel push pull set, this combination was the typical Ventnor West train of the 1930s.

    Sorry no photos to hand.

I had the pleasure of travelling on the SVR today, in a Churchward droplight pulled by 5164 in GW livery, on a quintessentially GWR railway. It would have made a cracking photo but I was too busy enjoying the ambience of 1930s branch line travel!

Thinking back home any weekend the Planet replica is rostered with the replica 1830s carriages going through Liverpool Road Station.

    One below from the 180th.
