No I do not currently volunteer
I worked in the chemical industry from 1960 at a factory owned by BP, safety gear was provided and in the early days if you did not use it then the consequences were you own fault, but the H&S came in and use became compulsory, but there were still those who refused to wear certain items.
Then during the annual pay negotiations the management included in the deal that refusal to wear safety gear in certain parts of the works would incur warnings, verbal, written and then dismissal. The local union reps were close to advising members not to accept this before someone higher up talked them out of it.

The GWR was always very good at providing Goggles in Swindon works and elsewhere when necessary, and made a big deal out of advertising their usefulness. Paternalist and patronising perhaps, but laudable in pre-H&S legislation days.

There are two interesting court cases regarding duty of care. In the twenties, a young boy slipped through a hole in a fence on the LNER, was struck by a train and killed. The court found that it was his own fault for slipping through the hole, as he should have known that the fence was there for a reason.

In the seventies, the exact same thing happened again, and the original twenties ruling was challenged. BR was found culpable for not effectively maintaining the fence.

Unfortunately they didn't arrive in time for my dad's birthday on the 17th. Does anyone know how long it takes on average for them to be sent out?

Mine arrived within a couple of days of confirming my order after it was announced they were now available. I originally ordered it before last Christmas, but as you may know, there were some production difficulties delaying the release. At the time I ordered the 5043 book as well, which also arrived within a couple of days from ordering.
Perhaps Ben could help you more.
