Sorry, Ralph and colleagues on this list, I must have been over-excited whilst texting from the train. On going through my records this morning, I found that the minimum speed at Grayrigg summit was 46 and not 56, and 45 at Shap summit not 46. My humble apologies - it's a good job I am NOT an official timekeeper! But these were still very good times on a day of excellent running.

My report and pictures will follow shortly

Peter, on a SUNNY Manchester morning - why could we not have had that yesterday?

With the Duchess on the Royal Scot 9 June 2012

This was my first chance of a ride behind Stanier Pacific No 46233 Duchess of Sutherland since her loaded test run the Night Owl at the end of March. It was eagerly anticipated, despite the cold wet weather in which we arrived at Crewe.

We set off gently with our ten coaches (and no diesel!) but by Acton Bridge we had reached 67 and we swept through Warrington at 70, continuing briskly to the outskirts of Preston. We barked up the hill out of the station, reached 60 again by Broughton and roared through Lancaster at 74, inside even time from Preston.

After the water stop at Carnforth we reached 60 near Burton and maintained good speed after the start of the climb to Grayrigg, passing Oxenholme at 53 and dropping only slowly to a minimum of 46 at the summit. We cantered through the Lune Gorge in the early sixties, with 65 at Tebay as we hit the climb to Shap. Again speed dropped only slowly, to 56 at Greenholme, 51 at Scout Green and 46 at Salterwath. From this point we slogged away without losing more speed, and made it over the summit at a minimum of 45. From there right the way down to the outskirts of Carlisle, we had an exhilarating run at around 70 (plus and minus 5), rounding off an excellent outward journey. 68 round the curve at Penrith was a highlight!

The return climb to Shap is less demanding, and it was a brisk and competent climb in the 50s and 60s. After from a momentary slowing to 48 at Shap village, the summit was breasted at 59. There followed a rollicking run in the 70s down to Carnforth, slowing only to 65 at Grayrigg before sweeping through Oxenholme at 73. More lively running on through Lancaster and Preston saw us early through Wigan at 71 and Warrington at 61, before being held at Weaver Junction for the stopper from Liverpool. A last burst of speed through Winsford saw us to Crewe almost on time, after an excellent day out with this fine locomotive.

Excellent video Ralph, especially of the return, storming away from the slack at Weaver Junction.

It was good to keep in touch during the corse of the day

Ralph; excellent videos of the Duchess. I used to attend the OLD Wolverton Grammar which backed onto the mainline where the Duchesses plied their trade on all the named expresses. So these videos always take me back xx years !! (well without the electric unit) Just out of interest what videcam are you using, its good. Pete

Thanks Pete, it depends on the circumstances and location, these were with a small Sony HDR-HC9 which I have been using for several years now, but on a couple this year I've been trying a Sony HVR-HD 1000E. This is a much bigger camera, can be used sat on your shoulder where tripod use is not possible, but I'm still not up to speed with it.

And the re-installation of Oubeck box on the up side together with the tall semaphores that populated the area - lovely spot in the old days !

I have a 3D TV with Youtube access, can't seem to find this video using the search facility though. Even after putting all or part of the title in, putting the full title in as above says "this video cannot be found" or similar.

Cheers but still does not work, must be something to do with Youtube on the TV. If I open YT on my PC browser & type in JLT Corporation in the search box, it finds his channel. But if I do the same on the TV it just finds a load of unrelated videos. I even tried searching by typing in the full url of the 46233 video, but says "there are no videos in this list". The TV youtube must be "stunted" or something. Also If I just type in 3D in the TV YT search, again it just finds a load of unrelated 3D garbage, mostly "Mario" games!

    EDIT.
I might of sussed it, just typed the loco number & 3D in the TV search box and it found it.

Many thanks again for the report Peter - I always enjoy reading them, and they fill in the details you can only guess at when linesiding. Looking forward to a trip behind 46233 myself this year at some point.

Glad you enjoyed my post - I try to write the sort of stuff I would have enjoyed reading if I hadn't been on the train.

Thanks for your lovely video of the mile-a-minute run of the Duchess through Lancaster -great!
