There is an LMS Brake Van for sale on eBay, apparently located at Oswestry

LMS 20 ton Brake Van (a real one!) | eBay

"A very rare oportunity to acquire a sought after railway vehicle!
Built by British Railways at Derby in 1949, this is a LMS designed 20 ton brake van. Converted in the 1990's by BR to a translator wagon, it has had a new roof sheet, but as can bee seen from the picture, some of the woodwork and floorboards need replacing. The van retains its original cast iron stove, and has a through air brake pipe fitted. It also needs a replacement coupling (drophead buckeye) at one end.
This is a very large item! 20' x 8' 8' and 20 tons! It is kept on a preserved railway, so if you want to remove it, you will need a lowloader!

    "

Is that the one that was at the abortive Bodfari railway project? (and is the originator of that project out of jail yet?)

It could be that one. If so , does the price include V.A.T. ?

Got released quite a while back, i'm sure i've seen him posting on here a few times but i wouldn't like to put a definate bet on it or wrongly accuse people.

However for £2,500 *current price*...Is pretty reasonable considering the condition, no doubt it will rise as the listing ends!

Scrap steel about £175 / tonne currently that gives something in the region of £3500 as a marker.

Isn't most of the weight on these vans made up of concrete?

If it is a similar situation to a BV we did repairs on last year the concrete is actually filled with scrap brake blocks.
So the actual weight of concrete is not that much.

Early LMS vans used scrap steel, later ones used concrete, hence the deeper ballast weights. Since this was introduced as a wartime steel-saving exercise, putting scrap steel in with the concrete makes little sense...

I'd be interested to know what type & year of brake van 'Ploughman' is referring to.

246710 LNER Brake Van of 1941
    York Area Group
Concrete floor in the door ways at either end of the cabin and not outside on the deck as in later versions.
Scrap brake blocks laid 2 deep across the whole width with smaller scrap bits as infill.
Concrete poured in around up to flooring level.
We had to replace the concrete as corrosion had started to split and force the concrete up and was affecting the flooring.
