    Vsoe always runs with a diesel on the back, even with a diesel on the front.
    After all the clientele don't want a heavy delay, and the company has a prestige reputation to keep.
    Its not worth the risk to their reputation.
    it also makes the job of shunting etc easier.

    No that is not true ! VSOE trains to Bristol have rarely had a diesel in the past.

    Well apparently that changed otherwise we wouldn't be having this debate.
    I know I've never seen the VSOE without it's diesel on the rear and I've seen it a lot.
    I appreciate with this forum you should never say never as theres always someone with the book to quote.

    So i'll restate it as.. most VSOE trips (in general, to somewhere) have a diesel on the rear. :)

    Even 70000 was let out on the VSOE with no box on the back. I think the truth is no one on this forum knows why sometimes VSOE/DBS feel the need to keep the 67 on the back and other times leave it at home. If I get a chance on the 9th July I will ask Wayne Thompson if he can shed any light on the matter.

    Bristol - this week was the first time I can recall with a DL and that was something to do, I would guess, with marshalling at Bristol.
    Oxford - always, because of the Didcot reversal
    Surrey Hills - winter yes. Summer (whenever you describe that!) generally no.

    I can't see anything mystical or sinister going on here. Just a bit of common sense on what are effectively non-enthusiast trips.

    But as you are sure about it, it must be true. Thank you so much for enlightening me.

    Maybe you should start a thread about the whole subject of boxes on the back of steam trains, and give us all a chance to chat about it?

    That could be such jolly good fun.

    I love reading all the expert comments about what 'could be a reason' and 'why it is' and knowing the real reason is so differant!
    Those of us at the sharp end, Drivers & firemen, do not like having to have an extra 120 tons on the end of a train.
    Sometimes needs must.
    The reason the 67 was on the back was a request from the train opperator, the generator car was unwell, could a 67 be provided thoughout for 'hotel' power for the kitchen cars and hot water for the toilet water taps etc.
    Simples...
