Which NRM locos would you like to see running?

    Interestingly, Cornwall came close to returning to steam in 1980. She was originally selected as one of the NRM's representatives for Rocket 150 and was actually moved to the SVR for overhaul; one of the very early issues of Steam Railway (No. 3 IIRC) contains a picture of her outside Bridgnorth shed. Unfortunately, examination revealed that the boiler required more expensive repairs than originally envisaged so the project was abandoned.

    What are the practical considerations? My suggestions are:
    - must fill a gap in the current working fleet (sorry Mallard and Duchess of Hamilton);
    - must not leave a gap in the NRM's own display (not Mallard, 2500...);
    - perhaps be something that is not currently displayed, or is tucked away in a seldom-visited corner;
    - must be in a reasonably complete state and not require so much work that its "historical idendity" is compromised (so not M7 245);
    - must be economically viable, with a well-funded restoration and operation plan, so it must be strong enough and reliable enough to work normal services on a preserved line or the mainline;
    - must not distract more time and money away from NRM's core operations at York and Shildon than current runners do.

    I think I heard recently that City Of Truro will be overhauled again by the GWSR, for use on preserved lines, which in some ways is great, but rather scuppers my hopes that the LSWR T3 would be restored to take her place as NRM roving ambassador.

    Actually, we Southern fans are rather well served by the NRM at the moment, with T9 120, Nellie, Cheltenham and the Beattie well tank all in use at the moment.

    Rather than locomotives, are there any coaches or trucks that could usefully be loaned to preserved lines for restoration/display/use?

    Must say Im suprised if it's indeed true Truro will have another ticket, can only assume she must be in fairly decent nick in that case, IE no big/expensive issues to overhaul.

    I'm another Southern fan, although I must admit, I'm not holding my breath for Gladstone, 563 or 737, wonderful engines though they are. However, I'm not a "Southern only" fan, and would like to give a plug for an engine which I' m surprised no one hs so far mentioned on this thread, even though it has steamed in preservation - LNWR 790 "Hardwicke"

    Well, the LSWR Tri-compo would go rather nicely with LSWR 1520 on the Bluebell, especially if we could also restore the Adams Radial (or the LSWR T3 :) ) and find a suitable LSWR brake vehicle...

    But you are into issues about preserving historical fabric - literally in the case of a carriage. That specific coach doesn't have surviving LSWR moquette, but it is trimmed in surviving SR moquette. That would inevitably go if you used her.

    Perhaps we should divide this wishlist into "complete fantasy if cost, practicality and destroying historic integrity was no problem" (hello Columbine, Cornwall, LSWR Tri-compo) and "might actually happen witha following wind" (hello MR compound, Hardwicke etc)

    Being a 'Western Man' through and through I would have to say in order:
    6000 King George V (3 Mainline cert. Kings, what fun you could have)
    4073 Caerphylly Castle ( The origional )
    4003 Load Star ( Looks excellent standing still so could only get better ) The progression and developement of the 4 cylinder GWR locomotive.

    Now I feel a little strange writing this but I would love to see a streamlined Duchess in full flight.

    I would like SECR D Class 737 at the Bluebell so we have an example of all preserved SECR locos in steam and would look great with 592, 263 and 178 in their SECR liviery. I wouldn't mind Gladstone as well.

    And returns for 6229 (sounds like its a few years off sadly), 4771 and Q1 C1/33001.

    One thing I'd strike off the list immediately would be 'anything of which there is another example in preservation'. So sorry Mallard, Caerphilly, Churchill, George V, Boxhill, M7 245... The, of course, any loco which would have its historical integrity threatened excessively by an overhaul. So sorry T3, Cornwall, etc....

    Whilst, of course, we'd like to see something that hasn't run in preservation, with those that have the second issue is dramatically lessened. So I'd like to see Truro get a second ticket, or Hardwicke...

    A poster noted an early loco would be nice - perhaps a donation to Tyseley's Bloomer is in order?

    If all these were operational shouldn't we also be nominating a replacement list of locos, 'called up' from the preserved lines where the above would do most of their running, to take their places in the NRM or other museum displays?
    No more than one representative of each class allowed :tongue1::hat::hat: !!

    Interesting, but where would you run it? IIRC it needs a rather obscure DC voltage from overhead lines. Electrify the Tanfield Rly?!

    As a Brighton man it would be amazing to see the only surviving Stroudley tender loco (Gladstone) at work. Have always maintained that if I became a millionaire I'd be making a big old donation to the NRM to make it happen! So does anybody know what state it's in? Did anybody have a good old sniff around it when it was at Sheffield Park in the very early 80s?

    Got to be the SECR 'D' Class - what a wonderful stylish piece of kit she is.

    The NSR tank. Stick it on the Churnet Valley Railway, then you've got the only surviving NSR steam loco in working order on home metals
    Copperknob. I don't know why -- just for the hell of it i suppose, it'd make a good pairing with FR 20.
    The Super D. I know it's in ticket, but it'd be great if it could have another lease of life after 2015, or whenever its withdrawn. Maybe in LMS or LNWR livery rather than BR for the duration, for a tad of variety. Be good to see it in a triple header with the Coal Tank and the George new build -- pretty please!

    Having, last weekend, witnessed the long line of rusting relics on that siding at Cheddleton - and the equally shabby DMU on the service train - if it was up to me, I would have very little confidence in the CVR being able to look after the NSR 0-6-2T properly. A controversial point of view certainly - and one that will no doubt bring the usual suspects out of the woodwork - but, sadly, fairly factual.

    Why not send it to Foxfield ??? NSR No2 was once a Coal Board engine and the line does run to a colliery! I am sure that 'Glenalmond' Dave would relish the thought !! (... and they do look after their locos there.)
