Steam Locos at Huddersfield over 100 years ago

Evening all

I have placed a lot of old steam loco photos some over 100 years ago taken at Huddersfield, locos are either LNWR or L&Y railway,
a lot of the infrastructure has now disappeared including the signal box on a gantry on the viaduct approach to Huddersfield Station

Photo no 2 shows a loco with outside valve gear and inside cylinders. weird

 

It's a 'Tishy', five of the Prince of Wales class were turned out with outside Walschaerts valve gear actuating inside valves. The reason for this arrangement was to overcome the problem of connecting rod fractures at the jack link pin-hole with the original Joy valve gear. Their LMS numbers were 5632, 5372, 5388, 5726 (pictured) and 5845. The last mentioned was built after the grouping and took the name 'Prince of Wales' for a short while when it was exhibited (as I remember) at Wembly. The nickname derived from a contemporary racehorse (Tishy) which reputedly crossed it's legs while running!

The Walschaerts valve gear was applied to five locos after the Betley Road accident in which a Prince of Wales fractured a connecting rod on the descent into Crewe from the South in 1923. In the MoT report on the accident the LMS said it planned to introduce a new design of connecting rod for Prince of Wales locos retaining the original valve gear (i.e. almost all of them). This was to be appreciably strengthened near the jack link pin hole and to have an improved big end and small end. Does anybody know (or know the whereabouts of) exact information on this rod?
