Just returned from a holiday by Lake Constance and quite by chance stumbled onto this very interesting railcentre . Three steam locos were in residence , one being a former Bavarian State Railways pacific 18508 in a very run down condition . M.Th.B 3 was a tank loco which appeared to be in working condition and outside was a 2-10-0 No. 2958 with its coupling rods missing but otherwise in good condition . Could anyone shed any light on whether the last two locos are Swiss and which classes they belong to ? Grateful for any information .

Yes, both locos are Swiss. The 2-10-0 is an SBB C 5/6 (C meaning max speed is less than 65km/h, 5 being number of powered axles, 6 being number of total axles on the loco). There's another one on site too, 2969, which is being overhauled using parts from 2958. The latter is being cosmetically restored. SBB Historic run 2978, the last one built, and 2965 is on display at Luzern Transport Museum.

M.Th.B 3 is a Ec 3/5 2-6-2T from the Mittelthurgaubahn, based at Romanshorn.

Thanks for the detailed information . Its a pity I didn,t see 2969 but , it was probably off limits .

Romanshorn would have been a hive of railway activity when the train ferries were running across the Lake to Freidrichshaffen and plans dating from the 1930s show many yards and railway buildings including roundhouses . Although the lake is large I am surprised they didn,t just run the trains around it .
