    And no-one could answer why an A4 which weighs less than a Duchess is banned over the Ouse Bridge, yet the Duchess isn't - The answer is probably a lemon anyway

    I think the problem is between Manchester and Chester (possibly at Frodsham if I remember correctly).

    Mr Dobbin is not quite correct there, 46233 can go to Holyhead as it has already done so this year, but direct from Crewe to Chester, but there is obviously a restriction on the routing via Stockport, Man Picc, Frodsham that the NWCEs are to use this year.

    At least the timings are a bit better this year, but it's still hard to understand why it takes an hour longer to get there than to come back??

    It is the distribution of the axle load that determines the Route Availability (RA). The A4 has a higher (more restricted) Route Availability than the Duchess due mainly to the tender I believe. Incidentally are you sure about the relative hammer blow, as 4 cylinders are almost invariably better than 3 cylinders for reducing hammer blow.

    Yes, 3 cylinders, approx 120 degree apart means that the balance on a 3 cylinder double acting engine is far better than either a two or 4 cylinder locomotive.

    This is why starting with a c cylinder loco can be more tricky than a 2 or 4 cylinder machine as the pressures on all piston heads is (virtually) equal.

    How critical is hammer blow at that point since both ways the loco is moving at low speed?

    Hammerblow on the Ouse bridge would be so low it woulden't be worth bothering with as the crossing speed is so low as your accelerating/braking for York, though it could be someone sat in a NR office looking at the stats on a computer and is totally unaware of the low speed at this point is considering hammerblow at full line speed.

    Believe the routing via Huddersfield is now in doubt? Picking up at Rochdale and Brighouse I have been informed. First train 9 days away. I'm on the 27th trip from Huddersfield!

    Whats the reason for the change of routing, low passengers numbers and an attempt to attract extra customers from Rochdale and Brighouse or lack of paths via Standedge. Nowhere near as attractive.

    Route via Huddersfield is reported to be near capacity. There are closures between Huddersfield and Stalybridge planned later this year for line speed improvements.
