Seriously, how fast can it go and how fast would it be allowed to go?

QUOTE=Foxhunter;479531]Oh! So you mean the rumour that Didcot is seeking a 90mph derogation for the Railmotor isn't true?

    Foxy[/QUOTE]

Foxy, you sly devil.... I thought we were going for derogation to hide in the coaching stock for 60163's next railtour and give you banking assistance.

I've heard it's going to be tested up to 120 mph but this depends on a) if they can get it into a C-130 Hercules and b) get it high enough to reach terminal velocity in free fall. :)

But wouldn't they need to fit automatic door locks too for that? We wouldn't want the passengers falling out, would we?

    Mind the gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap ...........

    Richard

PS: I thought the terminal velocity of the later LNER railmotors was more like 123mph anyway. Didn't they reduce the drag by fitting a shorter chimney?

No, the chimney was hinged to face rearwards and thus add thrust to the forward motion in a jet like manner.

That's a very old idea. Stephenson thought of it first:

Ah... So in addition to being a rail motor it is also a 21st century slip coach..
problem same as old.. In order to pick up on the return direction will require the aircraft to land and collect it.

Not at all. No need to land.

Question - after being dropped out of the Hercules and then recovered, will the Sentinel railcar still fit inside the aircraft?

Maybe we should use it as the support coach....

After spending the winter out of traffic due to a couple of the plywood panels all the moulding needing to be replaced and a repaint, the steam Railmotor is due to be operating at Didcot this weekend

It would be ideal for a branch line on a "one engine in steam" basis. Whether or not you could recoup the movement costs as well as make a profit on the day is another matter though.

According to the latest news on the GWS Steam Railmotor Website, it seems that the beastie has been passed for mainline running, this has been approved with the RSSB. So I sugest you need to lookout for a Steam Railmotor appearig near you, in the not too distant furture.

Of great interest is that a TOC was one of those behind the idea. Cornish branch lines with a rail motor anyone?

This is very exciting news. It is concrete evidence that if you go about it in the right way, the powers that be are willing to listen and are prepared to allow for derogation with the right safety case in place.

It is indeed. However, as with the forthcoming (temporary) repatriation of the A4s from the colonies ;) , it could have gone 'orribly wrong because of the selfishness of certain members of the railway press in ignoring a request to hold back on 'going public' until the i's were dotted & the t's crossed, all for the sake of a 'scoop'. No wonder the likes of WCRC keep their cards VERY close to their chests...

I'm looking forward to seeing the Railmotor in action in due course - well done to all concerned

I did say watch this space!!

Now keep watching for when and where, but be patient!!
These things can take time and are easily messed up by being pre-empted by the scoop seakers as mentioned above.

I know I don't post much on here, but this has perked my ears up! A Railmotor out on the mainline, sounds amazing! I really must congratulate the project on getting the ability to do this, and well done to all that have worked hard to make this happen.

I wonder if a couple of services one Sunday on a little branchline in Stourbridge could be sorted out... ;) That I'd pay to see!! I may also have to make a trip down to Cornwall if it ventures onto any of the branches down there.
