We at the LNWR George the Fifth Trust were recently informed about the following advertised sale of an Adam chimney from Basildon, Essex.

    ttp://www.steam-engines-for-sale.com/i000002909-Loco%20chimney.%20-1.html

The ad erroneously lists it as an LNWR type when it should of course be LSWR. I read here somewhere that there's an extant Adams boiler with a plan to build either an LSWR A12 or T1. Those seeking to build this might of course be interested in this original chimney.

Been informed that it's Avon Valley. I've sent them an email informing them of this sale.

One way or another it is bound to start another new build project. "Choos of the World" (i.e. Heritage Railway) will then write an extravagant feature in its praise. Bah!

Ahh, Paul tilting at windmills again? National Preservation's own resident Don Quixote.

As I understand it, the surviving LSWR Adams boiler (and smokebox) has long been slated for an eventual new-build and of course constitutes a fairly substantial part of any prospective locomotive, which makes this potential new-build a very viable project. The talk as been of building an 0-4-4t T1 tank, which meets with your criteria for 'practical engines' given our past discussions. In any case, I don't believe there's any immediate 'danger' of another new-build as I don't think it's currently on the cards but surely it's a decent public service to the chaps there know that a matching Adams chimney is also extant and for sale?

I'd prefer to see it stored in a cache of parts for an eventual rebuild, rather than rust away in someone's garden as a flower pot, which seems to be the usual fate of loco chimneys.

The really quixotic ones are the "wouldn't it be nice" brigade aka the "copper boilersmiths".

My sentiments exactly hence the reason why I thought it best to contact the appropriate people. Better for it to be appropriately preserved by those with the wherewithal and passion to preserve such a rare item rather than have it rust away as a flower pot or carted off for scrap. If it eventually makes its way onto a living, breathing steam locomotive, all the better!

That's a Drummond chimney if ever I saw one - Adams used stovepipes, which added an odd sense of utilitarianism to his otherwise flowing and graceful designs. I thought it worked quite well with them.

That being said, Adams locos were generally retro-fitted with Drummond Chimneys.

That was going to be my question, if it was in such a condition where it's still useable for it's original purpose, but your post seems to confirm it is.

Well, just thinking about the 'ready to fit' soubriquet to be honest.

Would NDT (beyond visual inspection) really be required in this case? It's not as though it's under any great pressure or load.

I wonder whether Scotsman's chimney has been NDT'd. Everything else has.

I'm not sure QLDriver, I'm not an engineer. But I'm aware that the chimney from 77014 donated to the 82045 group is cracked and therefore can't be used, and that, for example, 43106 has a replacement chimney (you can see the SVR cast into it). I had been led to believe that chimneys are getting on for consumables.

If it's cracked why not weld it. As for NDT a simple dye/pen check would be ok if you really felt the need.

The question I'm asking is have these things been done. It is being advertised as crack free - was this purely a visual check?
