Stoneleigh takes over Sheffield

Announced today at Stoneleigh, that they have taken over Sheffield R A. September auction will take place at Derby, but nothing said as to whether future auctions will be at Derby or Stoneleigh - which I think is a much better location.

 

Stoneleigh - never been - never will!

Too far off the beaten track. The best locations are both motorway and rail accessed

You seem to have missed something - Railway enthusiasts tend to use - err - railways!

I could comment but the post says everything that's needed about the viewpoint, and nothing about those who's journey's embrace all modes. Haven't seen the author at any railwayana auctions anyway and I've been going for twenty five years now.

Derby Cricket Club - centrally located - Accessible M1 and A38, Derby station a mile away, or a five pound taxi ride, accessible by rail north south east and west. If travelling by train, I park at Piccadilly at four quid a day, and an hour and a half later am at the auction. And when I leave I can be in London in an hour and a half - and no car! When driving I go via the CVR or Crich. Good halls and facilities - CCTV in the restaurant so you can have a meal and watch the auction, or even a game of cricket.

Stoneleigh - three buses and a half hour walk from Coventry, the nearest railhead - so public transport inaccessible, and in a cultural desert all on its own, never understood the move from Oxford to there.

 

Well the fact that it's Stoneleigh taking over Derby rather than the other way round tends to suggest which one is more successful and popular - they're obviously managing pretty well without your attendance.

 

I love constructive and well founded arguments - and the average price per item over the last few years has gone which way? - an investment market, or cash in while you can?

Oswestry totems - £1,700 falling to to £350. Kyle totems - £9,000 to £3,800 - yes - I'm glad I was never taken in by the hype!

 

Begs the question as to why you go then Frank?

 

I have attended auctions for some twenty five years because its a sociable day out with a chance to see all sorts of stuff of interest, and possibly even to buy some - and there are plenty of items still of interest - but the dealers won't get rich off my back.

Ian Wright started the second coming - all the others are followers - and I am not surprised at what has transpired since he handed it over to Dickerson and Moakes. I'll never forget them staring glumly at their boots as Ian announced their purchase. They should have taken the microphone and told the world - "We're the lads - watch us run it" Instead they let the competitors play catch up.

Its also the only auction where I have ever found some of my own property being offered and had to force its withdrawal as happened last summer.

 

Maybe you need to take better care of it then

I don't mind fair comment from anyone, but smart Alec sniping when the author knows nothing about the circumstances or my relationship with former friends and colleagues, now deceased, and what was afoot, says far more about him than me.

I found his comment distasteful and offensive and replied in kind - and if I ever find out who he is - will be pleased to tell him to his face.
