60009 today, the whistle has now been fitted and the sun peeped out just long enough for me to get one well lit shot. Not sure what the plastic bag is covering?

Orange lining looks bright to me rather than too wide, which is I am sure just a result of it being new, and it will dull down in time. Whilst, of course, there are far more important things - such as, another A4 back (Yes!!!) - it is remarkable how a small detail can make something look 'off'.

Reminds me of the story where a Battalion managed to get literally everybody to put their berets on the wrong side. The RSM knew there was something wrong, but couldn't actually see it!

That bag presumably covers the springbok plaque, being named after South Africa

Goes without saying, excellent new that No 9 is back on the metals [albeit for test purposes]. Fully concur all our thanks must go to J.C for putting her through the works again....

Just for info guys, in terms of the "Springbok" at Lochty, the Springbok was on the drivers side attached to the boiler cladding approx half way between the cockodiles jaws and the driver's window......

On the driver's side where the Springbok was placed was a brass plaque comemorating No 9's new home at LPR, I am sure J.C still has it..

I do not have any pictures of her running on BR metals [must look] to see where the Springbok was.. but have found one

    http://www.davidheyscollectionextra.com/page8.htm

Anyway, no matter what, will be great to have No 9 back.......

Thanks to all the guys at Crewe, J.C and anyone else involved with getting her back......

Fully support Ralph on this, guys, if you had spent goodness knows what on the overhaul, then yes, you could be perknickety, for me, and like most others simply great to have No 9 back 1\8th more or less.......

Are the painted crests likely to reappear on the cabsides?

OK thanks for that, and as has been mentioned it was only on the drivers side, which accounts for the fact there was nothing on the other side which confused me slightly.

Fifeflyer, I've sent you a PM.

I am just wondering how many of the A4s in BR green in the 50s and 60s all had identical, equally spaced and same width lining? Were the engines not hand painted, with transfers for the BR logos? It doesn't ring true for me that every locomotive's application of a specific livery was identical.

I do think enthusiasts get hung up on the idea of "perfection" and "recreation" where, so far as I can make out, for every rule you make there is an exception to it, livery wise.

EDIT: I should add, I think 60009 looks exceptional, and would like to add my thanks to John Cameron for keeping her going. You've got to have at least one BR Green A4 on the mainline, and 60009 fills that role perfectly every time. Looking forward to travelling behind her soon.

This is a new cab side fitted to the loco.. I wonder what will happen to the old ones ..

Looking at Ralph's picture close up reveals the cab side has 10 evenly spaced drilled holes in a square enough shape to suggest it is.

60009 currently sitting in the sidings at Chester with reported hot tender boxes. They've been carrying out small movement observations for the past hour or so, and I suspect a drag back to Crewe by the 37 currently on rear. Will update when developments occur

Shoulden't come as a suprise, if a bearing if suitable hot, you can't do anything until it cools.

Yup, especially with 4 hotoboxes! But surprisingly they've departed Chester at around 5pm with a limp to Crewe

"Hot Boxes" can be caused by numerous causes, may simply be that the loadings on the boxes are not balanced. In days of yo, the wheel set/s would go on a weigh scale to determine their their respective axle loading was correct..........
Got to keep in mind "hot boxes" when caught quickly, are usually not an issue, and certainly on this occasion it should not be a major set back........

Besides all of todays "set backs" it is great now to see pictures of No 9 back on the main line, albeit with her refurbished support coach.....

And of course J.C in the firemans seat !

I rather like 60010 in that state, looks more like a workstained example, not filthy but definetly made to work for a living and not an exhibition standard showpony (expression of speech, not a dig at cleaness!).
