    According to Heritage Railway;
"the Duke was hit with a tubeplate snag."

    Just Posted on Facebook:

"Operations update: All being well 71000 will move to Bristol Barton Hill in readiness to haul this Sunday's (22nd July) Torbay express (for details see Torbay Express Ltd's websitehttp://www.torbayexpress.co.uk/). Next up on 28th July is the Taymar Devonian a double headed run from Bristol to Plymouth and back for Pathfinder (The Tamar Devonian - Pathfinder Tours) with its smaller cousin 70000 Britannia. On Sunday August 3rd it is possible the Duke will be hauling the Torbay Express again."

Yay! Congratz to all who were involved in helping her return to working order. I'm glad to know that we should soon hear the South Devon Banks fall to the duo that is 70000 and 71000.

I see that 70013 is due to move from Southall to Bristol this Saturday. Does this have any bearing on which locos will be used on the 28th?

None whatsoever 70013 is going to Bristol to work this sundays trip to Weymouth. It has been stated several times DBS do not operate 70013, see above.

I don't think there's any intention to use 70013 on the Tamar Devonian, but 70013 being vacuum braked may not be an issue if it's through air piped (is it?), as long it's piloted by a dual-braked loco such as 70000. A similar thing was done a few years back with 5029 (dual braked) and 5051 (vacuum braked).

O well, just me thinking out aloud really. I don't read these forums religiously so had not seen the reference to DBS above.

I think it must be "through air piped" as wasn't it piloted by a WCRC Class 47 on an RTC tour at some stage, or do WCRC operate vacuum braked 47s ?

They do, about 30% or so of the WCRC Diesel fleet is dual braked.

Ok, thanks, so the 47 on the occasion 70013 was piloted may have been one of that 30% then. Anyway, it's completely irrelevant as 71000 is going to be partnered with 70000 happily, : ))

I could probably tell you if anyone has the number of the 47 that day, 47245 and 47760 are definetly dual braked and 47500 possibly is.

Ok thanks, it'd be interesting to know as it might help work out whether 70013 has that through air piping or not. I guess if it's not we're unlikely to see a double headed "Britannia" run any time soon.

Photo below is taken from The Lincoln Imp tour from Saturday 14th July showing vacuum pipe, coupling and steam heat pipe (left to right) so no through air pipe.

Thanks, that appears to settle it. And as has been pointed out on another thread a combination of 70013 plus either 70000 or 71000 wouldn't be possible anyway (at present at least), owing to the exclusive crewing arrangements that exist for these three locos between WCRC and DBS. Unless of course a railtour could be run by using a kind of TOC partnership.

Probably way too complicated to contemplate.

    Three points...

    - 70000 was operated by both WCRC and DBS last year (although I think it's only been DBS this year).
    - Just because you can't see air hoses in the photo of 70013, that doesnt necessarily mean it isn't through piped. It may have detachable hoses which are only attached when needed.
    - Vac brakes are no longer a total no no for DBS (61994 on the Cathedrals Explorer).

So a Brit double header may not be totally out of the question.

Doesn't that require a 100% dual braked Mk1 rake ?,very much the exception than the rule if so.

So to summarise, unless 70013 has through air piping, the best chance of a Brit double header might be WCRC providing the crews to both using a 100% dual braked set working on vacuum provided by both Brits (presumably 70000 can work on vacuum) ?
