Say for example there are 6 paths per hour, 5 of which are filled by service trains and the 6th is usually free owing to one terminating at Stalybridge, if that has to travel further due to rebuilding, thats 6 paths out of 6 used and non spare.

But there are more than 6 paths per hour. On weekdays there are 4 Trans-Pennine Expresses, one Northern Rail stopper to Huddersfield, one extra Northern Rail ecs to Diggle, a freight path (eg. used by the Binliner) and still some spare capacity. The timetable on Saturdays is generally as per weekdays and 2 extra diesel-hauled extras were seemlessly inserted in 30 minutes today!

I don't actually know what the frequency is up there, hence why I said "say for example".

Whilst NR can fall foul of doing their best by railtour organisers on occassions, I disagree a bit with the cynical side of these comments. Paths via Diggle for diesel charters are much easier as diesels will be "on paper" (or the computer software used by staff) better over the route + be seen as less of a performance risk to the railway as like to believe it or not steam charters seem to rack up more delay than diesel hauled ones and there are potentially 2-3 trains behind that could get hit by a steamer losing 10 mins climbing a hill due to a minor glitch (+ all the consequentials later in the day to the rail network). Most of the Calder Valley has marginally more capacity so whilst a bl**dy nuisance I can see why these decisions can get made even if I'd not want to be at the receiving end of the effects were it me that was promoter or travelling passenger.

But the better shot is from Platform 2 surely, and an even better shot would be on a day with some sun - if we ever get one!

Now to find a location for No 9 crossing Manchester on Sunday - the first A4 between Piccadilly and Deansgate since No 19 in 1967 which I rode as far as Rochdale - impossible now!

As I didn't know what time the next train on platform two was in, I didn't want to risk it tbh. But now I know as long as the train isn't late/early that there isn't a train departing at the same time as the flyer arrives I may try another shot from the otherside to please you next time

Is reddish South any good for photography? I'm deciding whether or not to risk it next week.

Btw, thanks ralph, glad you liked it :)

Ahh, it was your video! I was looking through my subscribers because I knew someone had filmed this tour at reddish. Yeah, it seems you get a good view either way you look. I'll try it out next week. Theres quite a few locations around the Tameside area I wanted to try out as well, but I may not get the same chance with the route change.
    thanks for the link!

23E - I had already thought of that one. Shame I don't have my office in Tower Block anymore - bird's eye view that was!

Am I right in thinking that this was the first time EVER a 'Duchess' has hauled a passenger train over the Calder Valley route?
A spotter's dream when I lived in Rochdale as a kid, and I'm gutted because I had to miss it!
Are all the 'Flyers' routed via the Calder Valley this season? Does anyone know if and when 46233 will be used again?
    Thanks in advance.

Alan, my info is that 46233 is pencilled in for most, if not all, the Flyers.
