I have read ("Leader and Southern Experimental Steam" by Kevin Robertson) that from 1939 the King Arthurs were fitted with hydraulic windscreen washer/wipers. Does Sir Lamiel have these? Did they remain on the engines until the end?

Don't know about Lamiel, but both Cheltenham and Lord Nelson have manually operated wipers on the driver's side.

Leader also had a wiper on the driver's window only. Incidentally, the engine was LH drive at No1 end and RH at No2.

Castles and Kings were indeed fitted with windscreen wipers on both sides of the cab from the thirties. The standard cab window frames fitted to other engines such as Halls Granges etc, alos had the facility, and the 3 Halls which we have rebuilt at Tyseley have all been fitted with them as they are useful. Similarly we made new ones for 5043 when that was completed in 2008 but 7029 still has its originals. As you might expect the design was changed sometime after WW2 and the later pattern now fitted is of a less complicated shape than the originals. This process was helped by the fact that we actually have the original Swindon patterns for the late type handle and spindle castings.

    regards
    Bob

Very interesting Bob - a useful addition to the nation's Bulleid fleet I would suggest.
