    Why stop at steam locos?

    Diesel locos, carriages, wagons, bits of rail .....
    traction engines, old tractors, ancient farm equipment, old fairground rides, lorries, cars, bicycles ....

    Victorian rocking horses, old corgi toys, books, stamps ....

    Somewhere, probably, groups of people think that all those things are vital national treasures and should be preserved at all costs and that they should have access to see them. Where do you draw the line?

    Perhaps someone somewhere is frothing at the lack of published information about my restoration of a 1932 potting shed? (And is upset at my use of non proto-typical corrugated iron for the roof?)

    Oh, and what are the worst excesses of unscrupulous owners please?

    Thats terrible... You should have used asbestos, as per the origional for your potting shed..

    I'm going to stop posting on this subject now. Everyone's bickering.lol. If matey restoring Galatea wants to keep it private, well, that's his perogative I suppose.
    We should all be grateful I guess for the private individuals who can afford to buy and restore these locomotives, without whom we wouldent have such a wealth of preserved engines in steam.
    Perhaps it will be a nice surprise when the likes of Galatea and others roll out the workshops gleaming. I just like to see the skills and challenges faced along the way by having progress updates. .

    What would be nice would be a nicely overhauled 5690 in LMS maroon, coming out at the same time as a 1960's Green 45699...

    If you ain't got cash to influence, then you need bags of patience instead.

    Just to tidy up this discussion for the Original Poster, I have spoken to someone who knows about the English Heritage processes.

    EH cannot "list" anything that moves, ie is portable. They only list fixed structures.

    On the subject of ownership of a "listed" item, they can, and frequently do list privately-owned structures.

    Bear in mind also this is very much a "two-edged sword" in that whilst listing might protect a structure or site, it does also mean that you the owner will need to seek permission to carry out work/maintenance/alterations and the like, and most likely will have serious restrictions laid upon you as to what you can and cannot do with the structure or site.

    ( For what it is worth, my money would be on David Smith turning out 45699 in BR Green. But I know nothing. Just going on what he has done in the past)

    Been here in the 60's when we owned a Fowler steam roller.
    Occasionally someone would come and enquire politely and, if there was time they would be taken to the shed and given the tour or, arrange a date to view if the time was not convenient.
    Anyone wwho came demanding to know would be sent off with a flea in their ear.

    The moral here is treat others in a way you would like to be treated yourself.

    Surprising how accomodating people can be if treated courteously and with respect.

    With any of the other West Coast locos that is true, but Galatea is owned by a charity, the North of England Historic Railway Trust, and unless it's wildly different to most charities it has a duty to keep the public informed of its progress and activities.

    I'm not aware of any specific duty to keep the public informed although they must also be able to demonstrate that their charitable purposes and activities are to provide benefit to the public. Registered charities must submit annual reports & accounts to the Charity Commission. The commission may scrutinise, and intervene in appropriate circumstances.

    Well if it is the case that charities have to make every work activity public and progress updated at every turn, is it not then up to the North of England Historic Railway Trust to provide this flow of information, it is not of West Coast's responsibility.

    If WCRC have become 'stewards' of the locomotive on behalf of NoEHR, then again the contract could have been written up with a 'No overhaul news published' rule? Especially if it is WCRC's money being ploughed in to the loco? ( Somebody clarify that last point for me )?
