45699 Galatea

It's not rubbish because it is fact. You may as well take a black 5, add some splashers and a nameplate, paint it green and number it 45562. Most people wouldn't know the difference but some would. A bit like putting an 8F boiler on some frames and calling it County of Glamorgan. It will satisfy some, but it's not everyone because it's not a true County, simply a hybrid that looks similar to the untrained eye. But we've been there a lot
'Alberta' deserved its place in preservation. At the end of BR steam, not only was it the last Jubilee, it was the last express passenger loco, the last three cylinder loco and the last to haul a royal train. It was also Holbeck's pride and joy. It wasn't just a number.

 

There are many other non-preserved engines that one could have made a similar case for in the 1960s (e.g. Silver Link or the last Claude Hamilton). However, the early preservationists (with the exception of a handful of wealthy individuals) had very little money and very little time in which to raise it. It must also be remembered that in the 1960s, no-one knew what engineering facilities were going to be available to preservationists once the BR workshops stopped dealing with steam. Re-tyring might be considered a relatively simple task today but back then but it would have been a much more of a challenge in those early days.
Ultimately, it made sense to pick the engines in the best condition, that would run for as long as possible without needing major attention. Sadly, Alberta didn't fall into that category. Let's just be grateful for the Jubilees that were preserved.

 

Well said. Let's be thankful for ALL the engines which were saved. We've all got our lists of engines which we wish had been saved, but at the end of the day, we have little to complain about, except perhaps that it's a pity more LNER engines have not survived. OK, perhaps a few too many of some classes ended up at Barry, but really we have a marvellous selection all things considered.

 

Quite right, given what was known at the time, 45593 Kolhapur was the correct choice, no one could of predicted the future and the range of engineering possible now.

 

Given their optimism with other LMS 4-6-0s, I wouldn't rely on the RTC brochure alone. BTW, which leg of GB6 is 6100 listed for? ;-)

 

45699's not listed for Waverley's on the RTC tour ad on the back of the latest issue of Steam Railway which as mentioned SR also says inside the magazine she could be ready for a trip on September 8th but we'll have to wait and see.

 

At least Alberta's tender lives on. 45562's 4000gall tender was swapped with 45593's 3500gall one.

Galatea

I have noticed on uk mainline tours 2013 that on the 7th August Galatea is booked on a trip with Statesman rail is this real or a typing error

Whether or not the mention of 45699 is a "typing error" is really down to whoever typed the info into that particular web page. The only likely confusion could have possibly been with "45690" I suppose.

As far as "Galatea" is concerned, we will know that it is on its way to completion when someone reports seeing it in the yard at Carnforth under steam test. The last "sighting" was reported on another thread on this forum, where someone related that a mate had seen the boiler lifted into the frames at the same time as the boiler of 35018 was lifted out of its frames. That was a posting in June. Assuming that was a bona-fide sighting, then we can possibly assume two things: First the boiler/firebox work is sorted, or largely so, and secondly that the work " beneath the running plate" is also done, otherwise you would not drop the boiler back in. Bear in mind this engine required a new pair of coupled wheels because one set were cut at Barry. I also recall that it needed extensive firebox work.

As Mr Shuttleworth has said before, " we will know when it is done" so I hope we can respect that, and savour the time when "Galatea" is out and about again. The prospect of a "Jubilee" and a "Scot" out together on the S & C is somewhat appealing.....Cannot wait!!

This is mentioned in Heritage Railway and I think that Statesman are 'hopeful' rather than anything concrete. A 15 guinea tour will run next August with either the two jubilees or Leander and 46115. No one really knows how advanced Galatea actually is apart from those who are working on her.

Yes it is real. Statesman Rail are currently requesting expressions of interest via e-mail for this train which it is hoped will feature double headed jubilees or a jubilee [45690 or 45699] + scot [46115] double-header. Obviously final traction depends on what is ready.

As the photograper of the above, I have to say that I didn't really rate it as any kind of "winning shot". Given the angle of the sun at the time (about 09:30 at Burrs) unfortunately the exhaust from the two Jubes shadowed the train. However I put it on my site because, as this thread indicates, double-headed Jubilees are somewhat rare. Like other correspondents, I can't wait to see a pair of double-headed Jubilees on the main line - hopefully both in BR Green.

Thanks to whoever it was (aliases really p*** me off) who first linked to my shot - it's certainly helped my Flickr "hit rate"!
