71000 & 34067 - 15.08.12

Two specials in opposite directions and a couple of hours apart came through my way today. Of course the weather has changed today and started to rain right on cue!

71000 "Duke of Gloucester" with the up "Dreaming Spires Express" passing through Freemantle, Southampton. Apparently this loco failed at Eastleigh with valve problems.

The forecast for this evening is good so may get them on their return.

 

70013 "Oliver Cromwell" with the return "Dorset Coast Express" approaching Beaulieu Road Station in the New Forest this evening.

Hi Dick, The photo would of been better with the sun on this side but I didnt have time to look for a better location!

Hi Dick, if you scroll north on the Google map from the hut, between the bridge and the station I noticed the curve of grass branching to the right. Could this of been a siding long ago maybe for livestock, what do you think? Just curious!

Colin I don't know to be honest. I can see what you mean and can visualise the area in question from visits in past. I would guess there would have been a siding there many moons ago as most country stations would have had - will do some digging over weekend and see what I can find Dick

Thanks! Could not find the book I was looking for Colin over the weekend so thanks for that answer - sounds logical that it would go to the sales site but I cant ever remember the siding despite travelling the line for 50 years! Perhaps never noticed it!! Dick
