On time at a dismal Blea Moor, class 47 on rear to assist and prevent any line side fires.

Just back from a very enjoyable day out with No9 on the CME. I wasn't looking forward to it, would have much preferred 46233, but I have to say the loco was impressive! Never had an A4 on the mainline so what followed came as a surprise. The accelerations were very good, condidering the load - 11 + 47 - the climb to Blea Moor from Settle was noisy and quick, despite the horrible mist and drizzle. Not many about on the climb and they missed a great performance.

The return was the same, very noisy and quick. The 'flange greasers' between MP 42.5 and MP42 caught her out when she was really trying and a few big slips ensued. So much so, that something had blown at the front end, a piston rod gland seal, or one of the drain cock washers/seals, because thereafter there was a noticable 'blow' from the front end. :-( However, she pressed on, topped the summit in good style and flew down from Shap to Carnforth to arrive a few mins early.

We had the usual dull 68 minute wait in the loop for OP and water and then we were away on the dot. The rest was easy, although the climb out from St Helens caused a few slips, but otherwise an excellent run and I for one was well pleased with the substitute loco. :) I hope the 'blow' is not too serious and that it can be fettled easily.

    Alan. :)

**Ah! Just looked at the excellent videos/stills and I see that its a drain cock blowing through. :)

    A.

Judging by the continuous feather from the safety valves seems the 47 made life a little easier for the firemen yesterday. Great videos and photos nonetheless.
