Several shots of 60009 from yesterday, racing down Shap, and between Lancaster and Preston: 60009 Races South at 77mph - YouTube

I'm not sure that the 47 assisted - I also saw the train at Selside and did not detect any interference from the diesel, rather a stunning performance from a loco fresh from overhaul. With the amount of rain put down on Friday, there was no need for assistance in any case. I could be wrong, but that was my take on it.

No assistance whatsoever was given by the diesel at any stage of the journey and thats official from both drivers Ron Smith out and Albert Seymour return. Also the detailed timing log suggests no pushing. Good driving and excellent firing from Danny Davin led to the "feathering" and an oustanding performance by 60009 with a trailing load of circa 540 tons. Not too sure why the diesel was there but certainly nothing to do with fire risk.

In which case it was indeed an outstanding performance by the fireman in particular. The dead load of the 47 would make an already challenging duty even harder. As said it was pointless making life harder for the majority. Still, it avoids any stabling charges at Liverpool.
