Tanfield Railway - Legends of Industry gala

Legends of Industry - Steam Gala Weekend

The biggest and best railway event in Tyneside and the most popular industrial railway gala in Britain, Legends of Industry is an event not to be missed.

With an exciting line up of locomotives, a busy timetable and a variety of other attractions it's an ideal day for families and railway enthusiasts alike... and with prices fixed at 2011 prices, its great value for money too!

Out visitors have now been announced and can be seen here. They will join our resident engines Twizell, Sir Cecil A. Cochrane and Renishaw Ironworks No. 6. More information on all of the locomotives appearing is available here.

This year’s Legend’s of Industry steam gala weekend is set to star both surviving NER ‘H’ Class locomotives.

    No. 1310

Built 1891, Gateshead Works.Believed to have worked from Tyne Dock shed from new until sold in 1931 to R Frazer & Sons, Hebburn.Resold 1932 to Pelaw Main Collieries. Rebuilt 1947 using parts of sister locomotive No. 900 at Ouston Workshops. Moved to Watergate Colliery. Became NCB No. 64. Preserved 1965 and moved to Middleton Railway, Leeds.

    No. 985

Built 1923, Darlington Works.Became No. 8088 in 1946 then No. 68088 in 1948.Known to have worked at Tyne Dock during World War II.Believed to be one of the locomotives hired for work on the North Sunderland Railway.Withdrawn from Stratford shed, 1952.Sold 1952 for use at Bentinck Colliery, Worksop.Preserved 1964.

The timetable will feature a huge variety of passenger, mixed and demonstration freight trains operating, including up to four trains at any one time. An action packed day is promised for everyone, especially photographers. More information coming soon.

Aside from the full size trains there'll be a model railway exhibition featuring around around ten layouts on both days, a full list of layouts will be available shortly.

The popular narrow gauge demonstration line will also be making a return featuring rarely seen locomotives and rolling stock from our 2ft gauge collection.

Also returning is the vintage road vehicle display courtesy of Sunderland and District Car Club. Dozens of vintage vehicles will be on show .

This year free parking will be available at Andrews House and East Tanfield stations, a large free car park is also located just a short walk from our station at Causey Arch. Please follow directional signage.

To be sure to keep up to date with the latest Legends of Industry steam gala news why follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook.

We look forward to seeing you.

Photographic Evening Friday 7th September, 6pm until 10pm

One of the best chances to see industrial steam in a true industrial setting!

A fantastic opportunity to capture forever the sights and sounds of a working steam locomotive shed as all of the engines set to work during the 'Legends of Industry' Steam Gala Weekend are prepared. Locomotives will be posed in a variety of positions both inside and outside of Marley Hill Shed, the oldest working engine shed in Europe.

As far as safely possible photographers will have freedom to roam to capture that perfect shot!

Witness our locomotive crews prepare, clean and then dispose of their steeds in a truly photogenic environment recalling the industrial sheds of yesteryear.

Refreshments will be available at Marley Hill Carriage Shed.

Sunderland & District Classic Car Club's Beer Tent will be open from 7pm till late.

We've still got some spaces left on a charter with both Y7's, details below:

    Y7 Heaven

A day with both of the surviving ‘Y7 Class’ North Eastern Railway 0-4-0Ts on the spectacular Tanfield Railway
We’re proud to be able to offer this rare chance to capture two of these long term Tyneside locomotives back on their home patch. Lots of opportunities for atmospheric on shed shots first thing in the morning (at Europe’s oldest working engine shed...). Then we’ll head out onto the varied three mile line with Nos. 1310 and 985 on coal train and vintage passenger stock. Opportunities for shots in the rolling fields of the Causey Valley and the deep and wooded Causey Gorge as well as at the character filled station at Andrews House.
The locos will work both double headed and singly. Trains will be crewed by staff in appropriate dress and we’ve got a few cameo scenes lined up too to give those of you who like a good people shot lots of opportunities too.
This will be the only known opportunity to capture this pair together on a full length railway this year.
PLUS book on this charter and we’ll give you half price entry to the Legends of Industry photographic evening at Marley Hill where Nos. 1310 and 985 will be joined by the other locomotives taking part in the railways gala. Lots of great shots have been published from previous evenings and we’ve been getting rave reviews for years.
The Y7 Heaven charter takes place on September 7, price just £40 per person (£45 for combined charter and photographic evening). We’d recommend good walking boots and appropriate dress. Book now by contacting Chris Walker on 0787 2900 783 or c.walker7007@gmail.com

We've made another little update to our gala web pages including some really fascinating archive images of No. 1310 and Watergate Colliery and one of No. 985 at Bentinck... Tanfield Railway - Image Gallery

Has anyone got any questions about the event?

Excellent, look forward to seeing you. It's got all the makings of being a cracking event. We're all looking forward to it, the pair have so much charachter and such a strong connection with the area, we couldn't resist them when the opportunity presented itself.

Hoping to attend on Saturday but never been to the Tanfield Railway before. Looking at the website it seems possible to park at various locations but would like to see loco's coming off shed in the morning if possible. Any advice re- best place to go would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Will the gala programmes be available on the Friday night, as they have had to be "hunted out" or not found at all on previous visits?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Steve

If your preference is on shed action then you'll want to park at Andrews House/Marley Hill... just off the A6076, first one you get to if your coming from the Newcastle/Gateshead direction.

    Andrew

Programmes are with the printers as we speak and should be available on the Friday night, I'll try to get some left with the refreshments people in Marley Hill Carriage Shed.

    Thanks

    Mark

It's got all the makings of a cracking weekend Steve... even the weather looks like it might be on our side for a change!

I'd recommend getting here by around 8.30 if you want to catch a decent amount of on shed action with all of the locomotives.

Thanks for the tip Mark, will keep an eye on the forecast and try to pick the best day! Will aim to be there for 8.30, about a 2.5hr drive from the North West.

We would like to apologise to all our visitors but due to circumstances outside of the railways control, our Gala visitor No.985 has failed. We must stress that the problem was not caused by the railway, and we are now reviewing our options.
Most likely 985 will be in steam from Friday to Sunday but limited to the shed yard area, helping with the coal train release operations as well as shunting at Marley Hill.
With this in mind we are trying hard to make the event as exciting as previous years, reviewing timetables and operations.
Once again, we cannot apologise enough for the inconvenience this may have caused everyone, and we hope that everybody will still support us, see you there.

Extremely hard luck. At least 985 may be in steam so all is not lost. I too will still be attending.
