Can't quite see the point of striking at the weekend - sure it would have had more impact during the working week?

Infrastructure work..

delaying a customer's train for a day or so doesn't cause much impact, but delaying Network Rail infrastructure projects costs the taxpayer, and inconveniences everyone for much longer.
This is a war between the unions and the government playing out in EWS's back yard.

 

I wonder how much public support the Unions would have if most of the public was aware this action would cost them more in taxes, on top of possible monday disruption due to overrunning engineering works due to the strike action, very little I suspect.

 

Whatever one's view on the rights and wrongs of this dispute, it most certainly is not a war between the unions and the government. I suspect that DB Schenker will have to pick up the tab for any infrastructure jobs cancelled because they cannot resource the trains - it will not cost the taxpayer anything (well, not the UK taxpayer anyway!) It is a pay dispute between ASLEF and DB Schenker - that is what the ASLEF members working for DBS were balloted on and, as far as I'm aware, there is no secret code amongst trade union members that equates a pay dispute with bringing down a Tory (or any other kind) of government. With apologies to the conspiracy theorists amongst you..:wink:

 

Forgive me,I live in London, I see almost weekly marches by some union or other protesting to the government that they are worth more than everyone else.

in fact I see so much of it since the recession started its hard to believe I'm not living through the 1970's.
tell me... How is the half dozen or so threatened strikes during the Olympics NOT aimed at getting at the government ?

Its a world joke that the UK has poor union relations..most countries are bemused by why it's allowed.
