E S Cox's 'Locomotive Panorama Vol 1' also has some interesting designs that never got further than the LMS drawing board in the period prior to Stanier's arrival. These include Henry Fowler's designs for a 4cyl 2-8-2, and more generally from the drawing office a 4 cyl compound 4-6-0, an updated 'Prince of Wales, a Beames design for a 4-8-0 freight engine and a variety of Garratts including a 4-4-2+2-4-4 3 cyl compound.

The book, halls, manors and granges at work has some Swindon drawings of a hall with 8f boiler, County 4-6-0 with Walchaerts Valve gear...

ES Cox's book on BR Standard steam locomotives shows the BR std 2-8-2 design.

I've always rather fancied one of these LSWR singles:

The story goes that Adams was impressed by reports of the performance of the Midland singles, and sent representatives to see them in action. The LSWR went as far as drawing up a design of their own and arranged for one of the Midland engines to come to work on the South West mainline. However, upon weighing the Midland engine before it travelled, it turned out to be several tons heavier than stated and the LSWR civil engineer vetoed the Midland engine on those grounds. Adams then realised it would be unlikely that his design would be any lighter, and the plans for further design work were dropped at that point.

King boiler (with exaggerated smokebox) and basically King chassis to these eyes - wheel spacing looks like the King rather than the standard wheel spacing used on all the others. Goodness only knows what the hammer blow would have been like. It could have been used to demolish bridges...

Maybe, but they must have been cheap as chips compared to genuinely new locos *and* put one over the government bean counters, so what's not to like. Amazes me that such an obvious wangle gets so much bad press. As it happened the usable lifespan was about what was needed until DMUs came in: wonder if that was planned/suspected. One assumes if the war hadn't intervened Swindon would have had streamlined DMUs if anything rather earlier than BR had their units in service.

Worth repeating yet again that the Pacific was never a serious proposal. Sometimes these things are drawn to show why they won't work...
