loco at Erdington on svr.

While at the svr today, I saw (or thought I did, I only glanced to the left) what I think were frames with cylinders on.

Went on Wikipedia but can't find any idea of what it is. Does anyone here know? Or did I imagine it?

Talking of "remains" on the SVR, when travelling a few weeks ago I glanced wheelsets with both "82045" and "1501" painted on them. Either at Erdington or Bewdley P-Way.

Presumably those with 1501 on are spares from one of the other 15XX tanks scrapped by the NCB, and the single wheelset marked 82045 was from somewhere like Stafford or Stoke where the wheelset was on display in a public park, and came from a scrapped 76XXX standard or similar class?

...or is my memory faulty?

 

I seem remember the same, and that it being from a 76' it has the wrong number of spokes for a swindon designed 82' or 77' for that matter.

This is not correct & nothing from 3612 remains at Erdington.

What you may have seen is the ex 2857 cylinder block which was replaced in the early '80s with one found at Britton Ferry Steelworks (can't remember which 38xx this was from) & a 61xx block similarly acquired as a long term spare for 4150.

 

Your memory is correct . The wheelset came from 76080. which was on display in a Stoke suburb. The number of spokes was wrong for 82045 and the plan now is for the set to be displayed on a plinth at the Engine House. .......to be arranged!

 

I remember being on the shunt/ crane lift when we moved these to Eardington. I think one of these blocks has the A word in it.
Also in the weeds are the remains of a turntable removed from Bristol for use at Bridgnorth eventually.

 

I was the driver of the 6 - ton steam crane when Gerry Carter and I placed 2857's cylinder block there that night. It was touch and go as the block was over 5 tons in weight and the steam crane was right on its limits at the radius. By sheer coincidence, I was also the driver of 5164 in Neil Scott's photo. Small world.

Is there a reason 2857's old cylinder block is being kept ?, seeing as it was thought knackered enough to be replaced ?.

 

In other threads elsewhere it has been suggested that the block could be sectioned and put on display in the Engine House. Alternatively, is welding technology good enough now that it could be fixed and reused (say on 2861 which has lost/is to lose its cylinder block to the 47XX project)?

 

Wasn't this the block salvaged from the remains of 4156, scrapped at Barry in 1980?

 

No it came from Briton Ferry as stated & is ex a 61xx (exact numer known but temp forgotten).
