Are No. 71000's cylinders lined? 60163's have been from the outset.

I'm informed the 82045 boys are also following this course.

The last batch of Class 3 2-6-2 tanks built by B.R., 82035-82044 were fitted with cast iron cylinders. It follows that if 82045 had been built by B.R. it, too, would have had cast iron cylinders as well. However, I do know that the 82045 team consulted the experts on casting before they decided to get the cylinders cast in SG iron.

For the information of anyone who is interested the AGM will be held at Kidderminster SVR Museum on 15th September2012, starting at 14:00. Both members and non members are welcome to attend, but only members may vote on resolutions. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day.

Just for the record, the AGM took place yesterday and I did resign as Chairman. It was a very useful and interesting meeting with just enough seats for all who turned up. I'll let others give more detail of the meeting. I will continue to support this project as I think we have to build new locos as the old faithfuls are starting to fall by the wayside. How many more can justify £3m spend approx like FS?

Whilst I am sure at the AGM the out going Chairman was thanked, I think it should be recorded that without his hard work, dedication and patience, the project may not be as advanced as it is now. He and his team of C o M have done a wonderful job over the last few years and lets look forward to the next few years of continued hard work with the locomotive finally gracing our rails.

The AGM, held in the Museum Library of the Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster was a great success. Details will appear here shortly when the notes are written up.
In the meantime, if you want to come and meet the sales team we will be at Barrow Hill for the Model Rail event this weekend and at the Autumn Gala at the Great Central Railway for all four days 4,5,6 and 7th October. If anyone is around, please come and have a chat, and hopefully spend a couple of pounds - better still if you are not yet a member why not join us? New faces are always welcome

OT but I can't help wondering if there is a correlation between that figure and the rumoured reason for a recent resignation.

I see that the project has now appointed their Certificating Body (VAB). A major step forward in the progress. I am sure there will be more to come shortly.

Sorry for the silence over the last month, there has been a lot of behind the scenes activity!
All the latest news can now be found on our new website including an overview Build Plan along with an overhauled / searchable gallery of the Clans at work and photos of parts held in stock.

The latest news in a nutshell :
Certification Body (formerly VAB) announced as Wayne Jones & Partners
Release of the 2012 AGM report
Latest Membership structure and rewards announced
Blog entry on the frame assessment at Ian Rileys' Bury works
    Partnership with UK Heritage Hub

We have many irons in the fire at the moment (pun intended) and we expect to release some very exciting news during December (just in time for the festivities!) and during the new year.

We are holding our next Members Forum on the 29th December at Nemesis Rail, Burton upon Trent, non-members are also most welcome. Please see the website front page for full details at www.72010-hengist.org. Why not come along for a chat, sample some festive treats, ask questions and see some of the parts held on stock!

Quick update on the project (more information available at www.72010-hengist.org).

    Engineering News
Look for some very exciting news regarding the combined stretchers / spring hangers coming soon as this long running task reaches a conclusion. A recent visit was made to AMRC in Sheffield with an aim to partner with them on machining some of our components alongside their research programs. An interesting possibility is the process of rapid pattern making using their 5 axis profiling tools. AMRC is used to working with Boeing and Rolls Royce so we will be in good hands!

    Steam Railway article
We will have a 4 or 5 page article in the BR Standards edition of Steam Railway which will be available in March.

    Horn Guide Machining
The frames have been assessed at Ian Rileys Bury works with our Certification Body (Wayne Jones and Partners) in attendance. All works have been approved and the frames signed off for mainline use. We are now sourcing a company to carry out the machining work, possible Stephenson Engineering, yes descendants of the great George Stephenson.

    Clan News - Project Newsletter
Digital (PDF) versions of the projects newsletter 'Clan News' are now available via the website store for £1 per edition with all proceeds going to the loco build. The store will be extended to

    Build Plan and Other News
Our overview build plan is available on the website under the News section. We will be updating this as the project progresses. We also now have a Blog on the main website that will contain more detailed reports on our activities. For those of you that don't know as soon as the frames have been erected by Rileys our engineering and operating base will be at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway.

Great to see the project moving on with good engineering background involved.
I really look forward to seeing the SR article.I am sure all its details will have been verified by the project team.
It's a pity I can't get to the NNR Standards gala, 'cos there you will find out the latest progress from the folk at the helm.

Will it feature a modified BR1B Tender ( additional water capacity) and a trailing truck with coil springs ? ( should be able to lift this off the forthcoming71000 model )

Probably not, but also probably not the cast frame stretchers either!
Any chance of the project coming to a deal with a manufacturer to produce a model?

A manufacturer deal probably won't give you that much, (dont forget they need to discount it 40% of rrp to the sales outlets) and have the production cost upfront.
it would be better to take the whole pot (rrp) yourself, and you buy a batch from a manufacturer with a guarentee of exclusivity (ie they won't do it), needs a bit of up front cost and capital would be tied up for a while, so before taking the gamble, goto market for expressions of interest to test the demand.
got to be honest though.. Money doesn't seem to be flowing to the clan at the same rate as the patriot or 6880.. So it may be true of a model if the public isn't as excited about it.

Similarly though if a normal production model was made, with a small donation to the cause, but a marketing pack inside the packaging.. It could be a good way to raise the groups profile.
