Seeing Duchess of Hamilton was second only to Mallard on my one and only visit to the National Railway Museum in 1992, but alas she was in the shops or off site. With an upcoming trip to the UK for Christmas I was contemplating a trip to York from Norwich to visit the NRM- out and back in a day. Mallard and Hamilton are again at the top of the list, but with 6229 moving for 9 months and the two A4s back, I'm wondering if I should visit Shildon instead or both- how convenient is it to visit Shildon by rail? Can Locomotion and NRM be visited in the same day? I had also wanted to visit Didcot, but they are closed during the week at the time of my visit. One day!

Thanks ever so much for any guidance.

Hi Joshua; welcome to the board.

Shildon's easy to get to by rail from York; you get a train from York to Darlington & change into a train for Bishop Auckland. Locomotion is right next to Shildon station, with a direct footpath. However, if you're already coming up from Norwich, you may be trying to squeeze too much into one day, to do both York and Shildon. As we're now in the winter season, Shildon now closes at 4pm too, which is worth bearing in mind.

Decision time, I fear... But enjoy your visit, wherever you decide to choose :)

If you've not been for 20 years I'd be tempted to take 2 days and try to find somewhere reasonably priced to stay overnight in Darlington or Shildon areas.

Take a bit of advice, stay in York, and that is from somebody who lives outside Newcastle.

    Both are desperate places!!!!!

As a Shildon resident for the last 9 years, I'd say it has come on leaps and bounds since the museum opened. There are now places to stay and places to have a sit down evening meal. You could do neither when we first came here.

Apparently they'll remain outside until Monday - presumably to allow the model railway show over the weekend to have more space
