I'm all for those Shap trips. I had the WCME's in mind. Get all 3 of the 5305 Locomotive Associations steam locomotives out there.

A Castle has been on the S&C recently and Halls have been up the West Coast fairly regularly, so surely 777 should be ok? But then nothing will suprise me with gauging issues! There does seem to be less issues up north than further south where the network is shrinking at an alarming rate. Tyesely however have managed to get 5043 to all manner of places though, how does she compare to 777? Sir Lamiel on the S&C in winter, now you're talking! She had some epic runs in the snow in the early 90's, I have some brilliant footage from PSOV on a tape somewhere of those.

Note: A quick youtube search & I just discovered our very own acw71000 was also out back then 777 Sir Lamiel Sun & Snow On The Settle and Carlisle - YouTube , see approx 5mins on, epic stuff which is surely due a repeat?!! Fantastic footage BTW!

How funny it is that we are talking about 777 in the Snow right now. I'm beginning to think that the 5305la are in the midst of setting themselves up for success in 2013 w/Sir Lamiel!

The problem with Lamiel in particular is as well as having gauging problems Swindon would be proud of, it's also only a class 5 at the end of the day, I agree take it up north if it's use on "home" metals is problematic, but it won't take 12 over Shap for example, hopefully it would be loaded like a class 5, but then you start running into the problem of does a shorter formation turn a profit ?.

That said RTC have made sucessfull use of 45305 solo other the Northern Hills, so perhaps it can be made to work.

It's a 75mph class 5 too, which should make pathing a bit easier.

A big advantage in pathing a King Arthur over, say, a Black 5, is the larger water capacity, a legacy of the Southern's lack of water troughs - so you shouldn't need to stop for water as often.

Coming late to the livery debate party! 1618 is in a hybrid livery: the tender is BR lined black (a legacy of the hire period to the MHR); the engine was painted plain black to match well enough when stored in a dark shed, but she isn't lined out and is still numbered 1618 (in Maunsell style) on the buffer beam.

You could add 847 to the list which will be Maunsell Olive Green when outshopped, AFAIK.

Out of interest - hypothetically, how fast would an S15 be allowed to run out on the mainline? The SR used them very successfully on relief passenger trains (that was partly what they were designed for), and on routes where a big load but not necessarily very fast absolute speed was possible, I'd have thought they'd be quite successful: somewhere between a Black 5 and an 8F in characteristics.

With 5' 7" drivers I reckon an S15 would be limed to 60 mph. IIRC that was the limit applied to 828 when it went main line.

Sounds about right Ian, I don't remember any particularly fast runs with 828, but it was certainly quite noisy.

I think generally as a rule you need driving wheels over 6'0 to do 75MPH, though knowing pres there's probably an exception to the rule somewhere.

The majority of this year's WCME were loaded to 10 or 11.

Correct, E828 was limited to 60mph when out and about on the big railway.

Gauging is a problem, but Tom therein interview declared a want to go to European country and 777's birthplace and conjointly she has loose end with Honiton, thus affirmative inject continues to be substantially on. conjointly they're hopeful of associate extension to her price ticket, however, the work on all-time low finish this summer can mean any overhaul is a neater job ought to or not it's required. Sir Lamiel contains a terribly bright future it might seem.

what routes has 777 been cleared for? i saw her a couple of years ago at Folkestone doing an canterbury working so i assume she can fit on most south western routes and the canterbury road,
Mainline s15, the one i would have loved to have seen go out on the big railway was 30506 when she had the later boiler which was pressed to 200 psi and with the urie's larger cylinders we thought she would have shown a few engines up and was she loud!! you bet she was:whoo:

Does Anyone think that 777 might get more mainline assignments after the 2 gala's she will be attending? I think there may be an opening for that but I don't want speculate more than what I have just said in this post.

I thinks 777's main line certificate expires this year. Unfortunately the 5305 LA website which was always an interesting read with regular updates has gone quiet since last September..............

I look at the RTC regularly and w/Braunton still in Bury(hopefully not for much longer please) I think she is one of the possible lococmotives that could cover for 34046 if need be. That is my train of thought.

Latest railway herald indicates 777 is about to leave GC to resume mainline duties.

Uksteam doesn't show anything booked for 777 until "End of Southern Steam" special on 9th July and then in the pool for the DCE.
